a lot of people told me ravetch was easier in the spring than he had been before and i think they were right. i really liked this class. the tests were really tricky but if u study enough and u know what ure doing, you should be okay. i studied a few hours a week and ended up with an A-. take this class if ure serious about learning accounting

I took Management 1B with Prof Ravetch and it was a very awesome experience. He's a great lecturer and a funny guy but make sure to go to class every time. It was hard waking up for an 8am class but it is definately worth going to because he said explicitly that he only tests on stuff he goes over in class. And listening to his lectures were way more interesting than reading the book. The tests were tricky so don't expect to do nothing but go to class. I spent 3 hours out of class per lecture (3 hours/lecture x 2 lectures /week) so around 6 hours a week on mastering the material--doing the hw, reading the book--and ended up with an A in the class. This is the best way to go. I believe for any accounting class you should always stay up to date with the material and constantly review. That way, you don't have to cram anything the days leading up to the midterm and it will all be in YO BRAIN. Take this class with Ravetch esp if you plan on going into accounting.

He seems really personable and friendly during his lectures, but when you go to his office hours or talk to him after class, he's unbelievably rude and condescending, regardless of whether or not your question is legitimate or not.

If playing guitar in one of his lectures, doing midterms that are more logic games than accounting tests, and working "the financials for a fake company" (which is actually just a euphemism for more homework) is his idea of the "unique educational experience" that he boasts about, you should bear in mind the sucker deal you're getting when you enroll in his class.

Because of Bruinwalk & past students I was scared to take accounting with Prof. Ravetch, but now I'm glad he was the only instructor for 1B. He is a great professor. His lectures notes are excellent and class is entertaining. Also, the rumors about this difficulty of this class are not true. The tests are very fair. I got an A even after taking 1A, almost 2 years ago. Also, I studied only about 5 hours a week, and about 10 hours a couple of days before the exams. Overall, I would say that actually studied less than I did for Prof. Litt's 1A class, because the lecture notes are so good that you don't need to read the book. All in all, I def. recommend Ravetch's class and even if I had gotten a bad grade in the class I would take him again.

My tips for the class: 1.Really learn the lecture notes. 2. If you still don't understand a concept then use the textbook, otherwise only use it to practice problems. 3. If Aleks is offered, use it. 4. Don't just memorize how to do problems, rather take the time to learn the concepts - (overall, if you understand the concepts you will be able study less hours). Ravetch is a great teacher if you can handle him. His tests are tricky because they make you blend several concepts when solving a problem. They make you think "outside the box." This class takes a large amount of time and if you take him in the spring, you should try and get a jump start in the reading. Stay ahead in the reading and try to stay awake as much as possible. If you enjoy learning about accounting, this class is really great. I fell asleep about half of the lectures but only because I'm sleep deprived and those chairs are so comfortable. I still recieved an A- because I read every chapter about 2 or 3 times. Go to the TA's and do every HW problem until you start thinking about ways to make the problem harder. Try to blend several concepts into one problem and then solve it. If you follow my advice you can get an A. If you're a crammer, you can expect nothing higher than a C+.

Possibly the best professor I've had at UCLA. His lectures are interesting and very clear. He is amazingly well-organized--all of his lectures are printed in a bound book and you fill them out during the quarter with each class session. Not only does he require all the basic textbook material, but he also reserves time to relate all the material to real life stuff which makes the material all the more interesting. Guest speakers and the quarterly stock game where students compete in groups add to the learning experience. His tests are challenging, but definitely not impossible--cramming doesn't necessarily work in this class! Although I feel that for the amount I studied (a lot) in this class I would've gotten a much better grade with another professor, I'm very pleased to have had a chance to take Ravetch's course, and I wish all professors could be as effective (but with slightly easier tests) as he was!

A lot of people have a strong dislike for Professor Ravetch. A lot of people here at UCLA have the intellectual ability of a lobotomized chimp. I think there's some overlap between these groups.

If you want to learn introductory accounting inside and out from an outstanding professor, while being frequently entertained and enlightened, please take Ravetch. If you want an "easy A" and don't enjoy learning, please take accounting at SMC. The bizecon program will be much improved without you.
