the class had an interesting concept - constructions of race and race relations in film and media - and is certainly for people who have a more mature understanding or experience surrounding these topics. however, dickey isn't particularly the most transparent when it comes to giving feedback, marks, or any gage on how well you're doing in the class until the very end. i thought i was acing these writing assignments and i got a's for those, but apparently i had not participated enough in class despite contributing at least once a lesson which led me to my a-. nearly dropped out cuz this was supposed to be the easiest class i will have ever taken. i managed to get an a+ for writing II, so dont feel too disheartened if you don't do so well for engcomp 3 (fuck this shit)
Some people would say that this class had a lot of work, and it did but it was always "fun" and very personal so in the end it isn't really as much as it looks like in my opinion. The topics and movies we watched were interesting. I really liked the professor, she was always understanding. The one thing that I kind of hated however was that we didn't get a single grade until our final one (just one for the entire quarter, no individual ones). It makes it kind of hard to figure out if you need to put in more work during the quarter and because she doesn't give her email, you have no way of contacting her if you want more details about your grade.
I loved Professor Dickey's class; she always challenged her students throughout the quarter and genuinely cares about her students. I would definitely take her class again, as I loved talking about the Keanu Reeves movies with her in class. However, the only caveat is that Professor Dickey is a strict grader. Personally, I did pretty well in her class, but I still had room for improvement. It honestly depends if you are a strong or weak writer.
As someone who genuinely hates writing, this class was not terrible at all. All of the assignments are very clear and quite easy to grasp. And besides the class itself, Professor Dickey is also very nice! I recommend this class if you're looking to easily fulfill your writing requirement.
Professor Dickey is one of the best professors and person I have ever met. Classes always started off with checking in and asking how everyone's day was. Then, we went into a discussion about the movie, article, essay, or whatever there was. I really enjoyed the class, but the workload is insane. Out of all 4 of the classes I took that quarter, I was up so many nights trying to finish over 10 essays. A lot of the assignments are due back to back so I was constantly stressed over the next essay. Luckily, the prompts and assignments that Prof assigns are quite interesting and engaging, so I recommend.
She doesn't grade any of your writing and gives you feedback on 2/10 writing pieces. I just don't understand the point of a writing instructor who barely provides feedback, doesn't grade your assignments, and just inputs a final grade. Still don't know what I got in any of my assignments...
Love this professor. I'm not a writing major but this class makes me consider it. She enphasize participation and group projects. Workload is more than average, but worth it. She gives clear instruction and feedback so you can improve. It's an easy A if you talk to her.
I enjoyed taking this class, it has been one of my favorite classes thus far. This class is not difficult at all, the professor is really helpful and guides you step by step. Prof. Dickey will engage throughout the class discussions There's not many assignments except for article readings which are to be read before class, Journal entries based on class discussions/articles, a podcast group project and one portfolio in which you edit one of the 2 essays you write, along with small 1-2pg reflections. Make sure you read the articles/skim, because they will be discussed, and you are graded for participation. Also, most of the class will be just classmates and prof, having a discussion on the articles.

TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!
As a freshman who did not fulfill his entry to level writing, I was very nervous about taking an English class because I did not know what to expect. I am a decent writer who struggled with expressing and articulating my thoughts. Professor Dickey improved my writing ALOT! She is very clear and she cared about my work.
This is a great class to take for English 1. She emphasizes taking out the word “it” in your papers and by doing so will improve your grade drastically. The class is long but Ms. Dickey makes time for breaks and she’s funny and fun so overall it isn’t daunting. Definitely recommend her as a professor as shes not only helpful but genuinely a great person if you get to know her during office hours and in class.
