As someone who genuinely hates writing, this class was not terrible at all. All of the assignments are very clear and quite easy to grasp. And besides the class itself, Professor Dickey is also very nice! I recommend this class if you're looking to easily fulfill your writing requirement.
SAVE YOURSELF, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS... I BEG YOU
Workload: Extremely heavy. My STEM classes did not take nearly half as much time as this class did.
Weekly assignments: 1-2 movies, 3-4 inquisitives (mini quizzes based on the readings), a few chapters of the mandatory textbook (she checks if you were reading them or not), 1-2 articles, and a 500-word journal response (every other week).
Larger Assignments: Two writing projects (essays) and a student-led discussion (10-minute presentation based on a movie or reading from the class).
Grading: The professor's grading is HARSH. On her syllabus, it is listed that it is nearly impossible to receive an A on your final drafts. Also, you do not know how you are doing in the class because she does not upload your grades until the end of the quarter. It feels impossible to get review as well because she may tell you everything is amazing and there are little critiques yet you still get a low score.
Participation/Attendance: Attendance is mandatory. To get full participation points, you have to interact with the class more than once each class period.
Final thoughts: Honestly, this should be your last option. The professor is entertaining and a cool person, but this class is not worth the stress and she was very unclear.
Do not take this class if you don't like public speaking. Participation and attendance is a requirement and if you don't speak up and add to the conversation, the professor knocks down points (and asking questions does not count for some reason). The class is taught through films, which is pretty cool. The assignments are interesting and not too hard, but the discussions do depend on who your classmates are because they're student run. The professor does give you 1-on-1 feedback which is so helpful and she is very nice during office hours. Unfortunately, the participation requirement is the most tedious part of the class. Would recommend if you're outgoing and love to yap. Would not recommend if you're shy and sit in the back.
