McDevitt is incredible. This has to be one of the best econ classes I have taken thus far. He is thorough in his explanations and also sincerely cares about his students' understanding. One time he made the effort to explain a theory from multiple perspectives during his office hours. His tests are very fair because everything is pretty much in his notes. Do not buy the book, but attend every lecture and take down everything he writes. Just review once in a while, get Luis Zegarra for discussion and you can probably pull of the A- I did. Good luck~

One of the hardest econ classes I have taken at ucla so far. The final was incredibly hard, encompassing literally everything from the past, so ridiculous to remember all those equations. The midterms were fair however. McDevitt is a great teacher, definitely go to lecture! Don't waste your money on the book, I opened it once the whole quarter, and DO the study questions. It's a hard course, but it's a weeder class, it's supposed to be. If you're not an econ major, don't take it, if you are I recommend taking the class with McDevitt.

McDevitt is not an inspiring lecturer nor does he teach a very interesting subject. However, he is extremely knowledgable and easy to follow in lectures. My advice is to take McDevitt, he is a great teacher who is always avaialble to help students and goes the extra distance to help you learn the material. He provides us with study questions and handouts and derivations. My advice for success in the class is to first: not waste 70 dollars on the book.
Second, goto every lecture, every discussion section, and office hours for both professor and TA's. Third, do your study questions and go and ask questions about them. It is a time intensive class, understanding the material is difficult, make friends quick the material is much easier to get through with a group of people.

McDevitt is a seriously good professor and seems like a really nice guy. Clear, straightforward, and OH, YEAH, English is his first language. He's not hilarious but who cares? He makes Econ 11 interesting, he writes everything you need to know on the board, and his tests are based on lecture and his study questions. Do the Study Questions twice, study your notes, and you'll be good to go. You don't havta buy the book, b/c it is confusing and McDevitt isn't.

this professor is grea! i mean seriously just do your homework and the class lecture follow it and you are bound to get atleast B. I understood after the midterm i should have studied...but seriously take him and you won't regret....

(very helpful, plus this is a plug cuz ucla IS cutting down lecture notes n they r very important to courses so buy ur lec notes so we can still have them.
aint it a bust to scribble notes from beg to end of every lec, its like bak in hs thats jackd, so keep ur privileges while u can. this aint hs, plz dont be a dummy. in the glory days they had notes for almost every class. plus costs rnt bad at all n u can share em or resell em. ur in econ yeah, demand for notes up -> notetakers for courses up -> increase in notetakers -> more courses provided and cheaper prices.
mcdevitts hands down best econ teacher, too bad he cant teach every econ class cuz there r some bums in the uppers hehe. oh, i got an a+.

Econ 11 is definitely not an easy course. Granted, it is the weeder course in the economics department, and thus it's justifiable that it's more difficult than Econ 1 and 2. But there are no surprises on the tests because of the comprehensive study questions he gives the students. I had a C all the way through but got an A on the final and ended up with a solid B. Oh well, I brought it upon myself. I agree with many other students:

1) You don't need the book
2) Go to EVERY lecture
3) Don't cram, cramming won't work
4) Do all the study questions at least 2 times
5) Go to OHs

Like everyone else says, it's a waste of money to buy the book. Do all the study questions, change them around (increase rather than decrease etc etc.) and make sure you really understand the graphs. Just looking at them isn't effective. It's beneficial to go to his office hours, and if you have a good ta, go to his/hers. The material is much harder than econ 1/2, but if you really practice, it should be okay. (do not wait till the day before the midterm to start the practice sets) The curve is generous.

McDevitt is an amazing lecturer. I actually found myself staying awake and interested at 8 in the morning. DO NOT BUY THE BOOK, even if you are a nerd. I don't think he even knew there was a book listed for the class. YOU MUST GO TO LECTURE AND DO ALL STUDY QUESTIONS, because that is what the tests are on. The only people I could imagine having anything bad to say about him are people who suck at Econ. This is a hard course, but the curve gets progressively nicer, and you can pull a good grade. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. It's the best class I've taken so far at UCLA.

McDevitt was the best econ prof I've yet had here. He's straighforward, clear and precise. Everything is written out on the board in a manner than anyone can grasp. The problem is that you shouldn't miss class, because all of the notes are written by him and not posted on the web. If you're really lazy though, you can get lecture notes, which are accurate enough. I sat in front, paid attention every class, and did the problem sets and I got an A. He's a very rewarding professor. I say take him if you have the chance.
