This class is terrible. The lectures are boring and the labs are extremely unhelpful. Multiple times I have reached out to Schauble and my TA to clarify topics or to clear up an absence and their quickest reply was 4 days. The exams are manageable, but tough and he only gives like 5-10 practice questions to prepare yourself with
I received a C+...after endless hours of studying, memorizing, and extra credit. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!
The professor is genuinely a nice guy. I had no problem approaching him for questions, and he does manage to make his lectures interesting.
The class itself, however, is not an easy GE. I found his midterms/finals to be very specific in terms of the questions asked. Labs are easy enough to do well on, and the lab final was pretty easy.
The book has so much more extra information than is needed, but I feel like if you read the book without going to lecture, you'd do fine. Everything is podcasted so you don't have to attend.

Professor Schauble is the best professor I've had. His class is really fun and he is always available if you have questions to ask him.
I can never make it to his office hours because my class conflicts with his schedule, but if I want to schedule an appointment with him, he will a hundred percent say yes and meet with you in another time.
He just had a baby this quarter, and the entire class is very happy for him :)
Schauble is a pretty nice guy, lovable dork type and all, but don't let this fool you. Oceanography is not such a "simple" or "easy" GE for a North Campus Major. I made a 10 page study guide for the final and still ended up with an 80 on that exam. Questions are super specific and I felt like I would've needed to memorize everything to do better. Now, I ended up with an A- by the skin of my teeth, but many who put less effort in than I did (which seemed excessive) were disappointed. If you know plate tectonics or specifics of plankton and algae, go for it. South campus majors, enjoy. North Campus majors, be a bit weary.
This class is not an easy GE in my opinion.
First off, when I signed up for the class I expected it to be interesting, after all it is oceanography. With that said, lectures are extremely boring. It was impossible for me to stay awake. He tries his best to make it interesting most of the time but the material is just boring.
The course requires a lot of work. There is a quiz every week for the lab and you need to TAKE THOSE SERIOUSLY! I did not and therefore my grade in the course sucked badd! So study for the quizzes no matter how simple they might sound b/c the questions are very specific.
READ THE BOOK! It doesnt matter if you go to lectures or not because they are not so helpful and everything is online anyway. But the lecture slides don't help either. All you need to do is read the book and you'll be good because the midterms/final ask very specific questions. STUDY HARD!
He has review sessions before the midterms and finals and he is always willing to help you and answer your questions so go to the review sessions because they are helpful and sometimes he reveals some topics that are on the test.
Another great thing is that he gives a lot of extra credit opportunities and they are easy! You need to go to a seminar and write a summary on it. Piece of cake so take advantage of that and do it!!
If you are taking the class, take it seriously, do the readings, and study hard! Its not easy so good luck!
Too much work for a g.e. There are 2 midterms, a final, class 3 times a week, a discussion, and tests every week in lab. If you expect to get a decent grade do not slack off.
super boring class, and yet, it is a hard class. Not recommended for just a GE class. It is not easy at all.
Really easy GE, the midterms are very similar to the ones in the test bank. Lecture isn't super interesting even though he's really nice and cares about his students. I recommend reading the text and you'll do really well on the midterms and final, regardless of attending lecture, which I thought wasn't really worth it.
Professor Schauble is an effective teacher and lecturer. He put me to sleep sometimes but it was probably more due to the fact that the topic we were studying at the time was dirt. Yes, he lectures about dirt, but it's not his fault. The exams were pretty easy except for the Lab Final (which is separate from the Class Final). It's a GE so I didn't think that was necessary. Plenty of easy extra credit to get you over from a B+ to an A-.
