He assigns a LOT of homework. It's going to take you a while. He's funny in lecture, but you're better off reading the textbook if you want to actually understand the material and not just know the computation portion. Exams are on the easier side where many problems are directly covered in lecture.
Genuinely nice guy and one of the better professors I've had. He explains everything slowly and coherently - spends first 10 minutes every lecture recapping everything, and makes a genuine effort to ensure classes are not so mundane(he does quick show and tells at the start of each lecture/shows us cool things/meme Mondays). He made coming to lecture fun and I enjoyed taking this class with him.
But this dude just gives a lot of homework. Maybe he gives us so much work because the math department controls a lot of key aspects of how lower divs are conducted(like the 24 hrs exams, which make it easier to score etc), but like yeah expect the homework to go up on CCLE weekly and expect it to take up 7-8 hours of your time(best case!). Otherwise, exams were mostly fair(one proof-y question on Midterm 2 killed everyone lol), and the course is anyway typically easy content-wise - at least relative to the rest of the 30 series.
This class was taught pretty well, but I did find myself going to the textbook a lot or Youtube to further understand concepts. Professor Radke let us have a week to do assignments. I had Radke for MATH 33A too and I don't know why but it felt like he assigned so much more homework for this class, and it was always super long and slightly repetitive. The tests were nice, because he gave us 24 hours and the questions were pretty close to what we learned in class. Radke usually never rushed through the lecture, but sometimes I wouldn't understand what he was explaining because he skipped steps. Discussion isn't mandatory , but it can be pretty helpful for seeing problems similar to the homework and tests. I'd just be careful not to make any stupid mistakes on the midterms or final, and make sure to turn the homework in on time, because the grading distribution was 25% for each midterm, 30% final, and 20% homework. Radke is a good person in general but I'd just be weary of the homework he assigns!
He is the most funny, engaging, and nice math professor that I ever take in UCLA. His lecture has slow pace, but easy to follow, and his exam is easy and straight. If he said this exam only takes about 2 hrs during covid, it is only 2 hrs. Also, he does not have quiz!! He is the best UCLA math prof ever!
Radke was a good professor, his notes were organized and he made the concepts easier to understand than the book. His lecture notes and doing the homework problems are all you need to pass the class. He gives extra credit on a random day just for attending the lecture.
Essentially, he is one of the better professors here at UCLA where he tries not torture the students. His notes are well written out and easy to follow later when you try to study them. His midterms are fair in the sense that there are no curveballs thrown at you. He does give some type of proof-based question but it isn't intensely rigorous; they are like mini-proofs. One of the unique things about Radke is that he has office hours 3 times a week and ALWAYS writes down his office hours at the beginning of class to remind students. He even takes the time to go to an empty classroom if there are many students in his office hours. Hmm what else... He does stutter a lot when lecturing but that is like the only small negative thing about him. I see a lot of reviews below say that he gives out a lot of homework and sometimes they were a lot, but i find it to be fair since the exams were easier than the homework. If I could Radke for an upper div class I definitely would!
I feel the professor is far underrated on Bruinwalk. I think he is amazing(probably one of the best Math professors I've ever had in ULCA, comes closely next to Michael Andrews lol)
No one should be scared by this class because it's content is inherently easy. Also the professor presents the materials in a very clear and easy to understand manner. He would do summaries and plenty of examples whenever we learned some new concepts so that we don't get lost. He has extremely clear notes, and one upside of that is even though you missed a couple of lectures(cuz it's 8 a.m. class) you can just borrow notes from your friends and you should not have any problem with understanding it.
His midterms and finals are really fair. Make sure you do the practice midterms and final and understand them well bc the actual exams are very similar to the practice ones. TBH the class is so easy that I do not have to do any outside study by myself and is still able to ace the tests.
The only downside of this professor is that he assigns way toooo much HW. A lot of them are just easy and redundant(but still requires lot of computation) so doing them is like a waste of time. If he can improve on that in the future, then literally it will be a perfect class!
Professor is very kind and helpful however the workload for this class is quite big. While the midterms where easier than the assigned HW. He asked us to turn in a HW before the final that had no chance of showing up on the final because the HW required using computers while the final does not allow calculators (a bit counter productive for students that are struggling in the class). If you are a math genius this class should be easy if you not it's not great.
