The class wasn't the greatest, but it wasn't bad either. Lectures and in class discussions were usually a miss for me, and I didn't get much out of them. That being said, the in class discussions might be better for others. She also struggles with her laptop a lot and ends up wasting a considerable chunk of lecture either fixing it or trying to divide the class into groups.
The class itself was pretty easy. Essays are graded "on improvement" which means your last essay is your final grade. Work is light and just includes reading a little before class, taking a bit of notes in class, and the 3 essays. She grades a bit harshly on the essays, but she also gives a lot of insight during one-on-one meetups or office hours. Use them to your advantage.

I enjoyed this course! It's graded on improvement, so as long as you put in work you should be fine. Prof De gives SO much attention to each student and will tell you exactly what you need to write/fix during office hours.

In all honesty, not entirely sure what the true purpose of this class is. I sat through endless lecture after endless lecture, taking 'required' class notes on the different ways to analyze Disney for pitfalls such as racial, gender, or social stereotypes. Trust Esha De to ruin Disney for you... I will never look at Snow White the same... *shudder*.

I like to think of myself as a pretty good writer. In fact, it's one of my strongest skills, which is why I got the grade I did. I certainly didn't get a B by actually learning anything in this class. Don't take this class if you A) want to learn how to write at a college level B) love Disney and wish to keep the shine it had when you were a child and C) want an A. An A in this class is as rare as a politically correct Disney film with no subliminal messaging. Meaning, it never happens, despite the claims it does. Good luck fellow Bruins, Godspeed.

Professor De wants all her students to achieve a "benchmark" of writing as this is merely an ENGCOMP 3 class. You must be "prepared" for Writing 2 and advanced writing.
Sounds reasonable, right? Here's the tea.

-You will watch fragments of Disney movies in class. (Snow White, Beauty and the Beast, Mulan, etc.)
-You will write 2 1/2 papers on these movies. (Paper One, Paper Two, and Paper Three. Paper Three is an upgrade of Paper Two.)
-The papers that you write about movies will most likely be around the themes of the North American partriachal gender schema, gender expression, racism, and etc. In Paper One you will only be able to derive quotes and substance from the materials she provides.
-The movies may or may not work. Prof De openly admits she is not a friend to technology or math.
-Following the fact that Professor De is not a friend of math, the grading scale is very different. Your Paper was satisfactory: B. Your Paper was just okay: B- Your Paper needs a lot of improvement: C~. Your Paper was really really good: B+/A-.
-The legend of the A. Professor awards one A to the most exemplary, most improved Paper Three. The maximum number of A's she will ever give to a class is 2. These standards are subjective.
-She grades on improvement. This is basically your only saving grace. Go to her office hours. She is actually very helpful. She probably won't listen to what you have to say; don't try to defend your paper. She is an actual English professor, so just explain the structure and she will heal all wounds of logic and pride in her own words (that are better than yours).

Watch movie every day. Little work to do. Your final grade doesn't depend on how much efforts you put in. It's more like she randomly assigns grades to her students. She grades you on improvement. That's right, never heard of that huh? This means your first two paper have nothing to do with your final grade. My suggestion is go to office hours as much as you can and just talk to her. Never argue with her. NEVER. She might contradict herself in her conferences. But that's OK. Just listen to her and live with it. It is definitely an easy class. Not easy to get an A, but about half of the class gets A-. She's a cute and nice lady tho, with a horrible memory.

Probably the easiest English professor you could take. All you do is watch movies and occasionally there's an article you have to read thats really easy as well. You have three conferences for 3 essays and the third essay is a revision. She drove me crazy during the conferences and picks out really random things that she thinks you're doing wrong. However, she cancels class during the conferences which is good. Even though she drove me crazy at times, I would definitely recommend because it's not a lot of work and compared to my friends who had other professors for this course, I was very lucky regarding workload. You could definitely take an extra course if you take English with De.

A guaranteed A- is in your hands at the moment when you enrolled in her English Composition 3, unless you barely graduated from your ESL class or speak idiosyncratically in Klingon grammar or? I don’t know. But if you really wanna learn something in your English class, congratulations, epic failure in choosing her.
She is indeed nice and knowledgeable, and her class easy. She just doesn’t know how to teach.
Based on her cockamamie math calculation, she evacuates your grades on the basis of your “improvement,” which, intangibly, is barely a criterion. Yeah you guessed this right- she only gives you a final grade that largely, if not only, depends on how she likes you.
This stubborn lady holds 3 conferences, during which she listens to your words and simply disregards them. Remember, never argue with a lady. Oh you wanna be creative and write your own thesi… wait, why on earth do you need your own thoughts if you already had an A- in your hands?

it is true that she can be disorganized time to time and forgets what she said before. however, if you try hard, she will notice that and will try to provide you pretty much everything you ask. she is very down-to-earth, class material is easy and fun! i really recommend to take De for encom3.
