This is an easy GE, but it is very engaging and interesting. Professor Carpio does a great job planning lecture. Lectures are engaging for the most part, very organized, and easy to follow. There is a good amount of reading, but I almost never did the reading because we went over it in discussion and Professor Carpio would also talk about it in class. Your grade is based on 4 things: the midterm, a zine project, participation (going to discussions) and a final. The midterm was 2 parts: keywords and short answers. There was a lot to study for this but it was manageable and there wasn't harsh grading (I got a 98 and just studied the night before). The zine project was also very easy but did require some work and creativity, but again was graded pretty easy. (I'm not artistic at all and got a 100). I attended every discussion but probably talked a total of 4 times and still received a 100 for participation. Professor Carpio was very understanding of the coronavirus crisis at hand and made the final optional, so I did not take the final! I ended up with an A+ in the class and only put in work when there was something graded due! I also had Rachel as my TA and she is such a caring human! Take this class!
I loved this class so much! I'm an LA native that didn't know much about my city and this class taught me a lot. The exams and work was extremely light and I'd always be so excited to come to this class. The zine project was very simple, just be artistic and know the class material and you'll get an A. Professor Carpio was so understanding when corona problems started, and she made the final paper optional! Apart from that, she was so organized with every lecture, was always engaging her students, and etc. I highly recommend this class if anyone wants to take an easy GE with a light load of work, learn interesting topics, or broaden their knowledge about the Chicano/a/x culture! loved loved loved
This is an easy GE with lots of reading that in my opinion does not need to be done as often as they require it, I would simply skim through some pages and I was fine. The only thing is before choosing this class I suggest to figure out whether you like history or not as this class focuses on social issues that have developed over decades ago. Professor Carpio is new so in my lectures she was just learning the ropes to things and so I believe that is why her presentations didn't seem to be very engaging. She is very compassionate and understanding as are all of the TAs. Personally I still preferred Chicano 10B since it was based more on social issues and strategies for change.
Carpio is a nice and easy to understand lecturer. This was a pretty easy GE and also really interesting. Chicano history is especially relevant to Los Angeles. Discussion is mandatory attendance. I had Iris and she was a really fair TA, also really nice to talk to outside of class. Overall I would definitely take this class again. Highly recommend to everyone needing to fulfill a GE.
The class is very engaging. Carpio is very organized, so you shouldn't ever be confused about what she's lecturing in class. You d have to read quite a bit, but you can honestly skim with friends. For the first half of the quarter, the vocabulary words are very important so just focus on knowing the significance of each word to Chicano history. The zine project is very laid back because there aren't many restrictions. Basically just know the vocabulary words and how they connect to history and each other.
This class was the largest I have ever taken at UCLA, with about 550 students. Lectures were generally interesting, though could get extremely boring at times. Discussion sections were useless, but attendance at them was mandatory. Grade is dependent on midterm, final, participation, and a "zine" project where you have to create a little artsy booklet. Overall though, the class was incredibly easy and Carpio was very helpful in office hours. She definitely made me feel like she cared even though there were 500 others in the class.
Professor Carpio is one of the best professors at UCLA. I have never been interested in Chicano studies but now I want to pursue a minor. She is an engaging lecturer and you can see her passion when she is lecturing. Her tests are exactly like the study guide she gives out so make sure to do the essay examples from the study guide. She basically just rewords the study guide.
I loved this class ! The midterm was divided in two parts: key-terms were done in section and 2 essays which were done in lecture. The TA’s graded really nice 🥺 There was also a zine which integrated keywords and the individual. Our final became optional because of the virus, but it was easy either way. There were 4 prompts to choose from and we had to write a 2-3 page essay for 2/4 prompts with a bibliography and keyword integration. If you need to buy the book for this class you can text me. The U.S Central Americans book was $30 new and I am selling it for $15, still new! My number is **********
