I took AP Calculus BC in 12th grade and had to take this class since I received a 4 on the AP exam (annoying but whatever), so I came in pretty unexcited to learn the parts I hated about the AP Calc BC class, again. However, Rooney was an exceptional professor. He's super young and dorky, and his jokes made the 8 am class four days a week (almost) worth it. He taught concepts in a way that made them super easy to understand, and he did tons of examples in class that added to my understanding of the topics. The weekly discussion quizzes were super easy as long as you did the homework, and the first midterm wasn't too bad either. It wasn't until the series section that I really started struggling; the homework questions were a lot more complicated than the examples in class, and therefore Midterm II was a joke. Other students in the class seemed to think so also, since the average grade for Midterm II was a C or D I believe. The final was just as bad, and although I thought I did okay, I was very very wrong, as before the final I had a B average, and I ended up passing with a C+. If I had to take the class again, I would do a lot more practice problems from the book, and really take the time to understand concepts that I wasn't too confident about. Rooney was great and I would recommend taking his 31B class for sure, just make sure not to underestimate the power of Midterm II and the final.
Rooney's lectures consisted of him copying his notes onto the board word for word. Lecture wise, he was a great professor as his handwriting is phenomenal and he explains the topics very clearly. Each discussion consisted of a quiz that mirrored the homework given for that week. Those were fairly easy as most people got 100% on them because as long as you did the homework, you were fine. The first midterm was easy mostly because the topics covered on it were easy but most people did well on it. The second midterm, however, was a different story. I found it hard as we were not given enough time and often times problems tested your ability to use math tricks in conjunction with the material. The average for that was in the 60s. The final was roughly the same difficulty as the second midterm although I managed to get an A on it as I felt we were given much more time for every problem. Overall, it is not too hard to get a good grade in the class as long as you put in the work outside of just doing homework problems.
Rooney was honestly a really good professor. Even though I failed this class, I was dealing with a lot and would have gotten at least a B if circumstances were different. He is very intuitive, and does a good job of explaining material in a way that is understandable. Interestingly enough, he is a funny guy. Although there isn't homework, per se, there is a quiz every week in section covering that week's homework. The midterm and final were relatively difficult, but with a lot of preparation, you'll be fine. Overall, I enjoyed taking his class, and wouldn't mind taking another class with him in the future.
I simply did not understand the material of this class. But that is no fault to Jacob. He makes concepts, or at least made them appear to be, very clear and took many questions to ensure everyone understood. His handwriting is impeccable and his lectures are incredibly well structured. That being said, his tests were rather difficult. The first midterm was fine (I think median was around an 84) but the second midterm was a sh*tshow (median around a 62). They weren't conceptual or anything like that, but they were just really hard problems. Other than his tests (which determine your grade which most people will weigh as the most important factor in choosing a professor), you will leave his class feeling as though you understood everything he just taught perfectly, only to then bomb his midterm
I completely agree with a previous review so I'm just gonna add it here
"Professor Rooney is a great lecturer and I felt like the concepts during lecture were clear, well-explained, and made sense. The only problem was that the examples, sample problems, and overall depth of what we covered in lecture were NOTHING like the homework problems. Test questions are significantly harder than the problems you do in class. The first half of the class was really easy and well-paced, so I got a perfect score on the first midterm, but after the first midterm the pace quadrupled and I felt like the second half of the class could have been its own class in itself. It was just way too much information that we weren't really given enough time to master and we also weren't really given hard-ball questions in class that he worked out of the board, so they were difficult to self-study. The last week of lectures felt rushed to squeeze in the last bunch of concepts for the final. The second midterm and final were WAY harder than the first midterm and quizzes in discussion and brought my grade down.
Honestly, I think Rooney is such a skilled lecturer and great at explaining things, so I think if he were to pace the class better and include more complex/difficult problems in class rather than basic examples, we would have all felt more prepared. But by the time the final rolled around everyone in my study group felt solid about the first half of the class and clueless about the second."
He is a GREAT professor and will work with you however much you need to attempt to understand the concepts. HOWEVER, his tests will get you! and they're basically the only thing in the grade book. This class is hard and there's no other way to put it.
I LOVE ROONEY! He's engaging, he answers questions clearly, and his tests are challenging but fair. The only complaint I have about this class is that the weekly homework quizzes in discussion mean you can't really use discussion to ask questions about the next week's homework since you probably won't have started it yet. He assigns a lot of even-numbered questions in the textbook, which aren't in the solution manual and can't be found easily online.
Rooney is by far the best math professor I've ever had. I am honestly not the best at math
(I got a B and B+ in my other two math classes so far), but if you go to class, pay attention to lectures, and do homework, you will be fine. His lectures are extremely clear, tests are fair (not necessarily easy, but nothing beyond what was covered in hw or lecture).
Very strict professor with really nice handwriting and drawing (which is super helpful for this class, in particular). Math 32B, however, is pretty hard, and he gives a lot of homework, but it's definitely a doable class.
Just got my final grade and I would like to write a review about this class. The professor is really clear and knows his stuff, just like the reviews below said. I totally agree that he doesn't look so approachable at first, but he really tries to answer your questions and help you in class and office hours. Though I have to say that even though the lecture was really clear, there's like a huge difference in the difficulty of homework and the questions we went over in class. Also, the second midterm is quite fair but the first one really got me down. The open-book exam definitely helped me in this class because I don't think I can do as well as I did in the final without notes. Speaking of this, knowing what all the formulas are and when to use them really matters. I personally struggled a lot on differentiating all the formulas and deciding when to use which. In sum, I really recommend Rooney if you need to take this class!
Prof Rooney is the best professor I've ever had. His lectures are extremely clear and organized. Also, he cares his students and is always patient with questions raised by students. Exams are not hard as long as you do all the hws. Really good professor, and I want to have more classes with him!
