Rooney was one of the best math teachers I've had so far at UCLA, even though this was undoubtedly the hardest class I've taken so far. His grading policy is generous but also can freak people out, homework quizzes are 10%, midterms 20%, and the final 50%, or you can drop a midterm and have the final be worth a whopping 70%. I did ok to poor on both midterms (84 and 72 percent) but I was able to drop the 72 on the final and scrape together an A. Asking questions in his class never feels scary, since he always makes you feel really good about asking by saying "great question" after almost every question, even if it turns out I was asking about something super obvious that I'd just misunderstood. He does assign a lot of homework and it's pretty difficult (compared to the other 32B teachers when I was taking it), but even though they are difficult it really helps you prepare for the exams, since honestly a lot of the homework problems are harder than the tests. Grading is pretty generous too. Take Rooney if you can!
Rooney is a fantastic lecturer. He made all the concepts in 32B very clear and I found this class to be easier than 32A. The breakdown either is 10% Quizzes, 20% each midterm, 50% Final or 10% Quizzes, 20% better midterm, 70% final. The second midterm I found to be easier than the first one. A lot of his test questions are based on examples from lecture so review those before the tests!
Rooney was a great professor for 32B! Sometimes he got a little bit tangled up in notation, but most of the time he was always clear and easy to understand. He is very considerate toward non-math majors and writes neat notes on the board (with very thick chalk). His tests were fair, although his first midterm had a bit of a curveball due to a typo that he made, but he was kind enough to give everybody full credit on that question due to the error. I'll miss his quirky remarks and dry humor!
I think Rooney did a good job. It's tough with math classes because a lot of it just needs to be practiced individually, but his HW, quizzes, and tests were very fair. He teaches clearly so ultimately if you study a bit you'll do fine. I would recommend him.
Math 32B is an insanely difficult class. However, Professor Rooney is actually a really good professor. his drawings and diagrams were absolute works of art, fit to be on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican, and he explained things very clearly. Rooney is a little high-strung, however, and he can come off as a little cold. However, he really is an excellent professor.
2 Midterms. If you do bad on one, you can omit it but the final will be worth 70% of your grade. Even though I got a pretty good grade on the final, I wasn't able to get a B+ because the final is so heavily weighted. Professor teaches well and midterms are pretty difficult. Overall, getting an A in this class isn't very easy unless you can ace all of your midterms.
Great professor tbh! He gives such clear and engaging lectures and he tries to answer every students' questions. He would always go to class with a big smile and enthusiasm. The material is a little hard but it's manageable. Just do lots of practice problems and you will do well on the exams.
Love him so much as a professor since he really cares about his students and his lectures are amazing
Rooney is one of my favorite professors so far at UCLA. He is a great lecturer: both informative and engaging. He uses a lot of example problems in lecture which help you understand the material quickly. Also, his chalkboard drawings are SO GOOD.
He is a pretty solid professor. He is a good lecturer I will give him that. However, the problems he goes over in class are not as difficult as the homework or the exam problems so it is kind of hard to do the homework just based on the lectures. He is pretty helpful in his office hours, he clearly knows his stuff. I struggled a lot because the rubric for when he grades the test essentially makes it so you have to be PERFECT to get a good grade. Little mistakes are harshly graded with his rubrics. However, they were pretty fair in terms of difficulty I must admit.
