Avoid if at all possible. Makes a potentially interesting course frustratingly difficult without reason. Very nit-picky grading on papers (watch out for the outline, it is also graded and it is what kept me from an A on the paper). Tests are exhausting, not because of the subject matter, but rather the ambiguous phrasing of questions. You have been warned.

dr djedje is a very sweet woman, but i wouldn't take one of her classes again. it was ridiculously easy--i got an a+ and i barely did anything at all. i literally studied for the final an hour ahead of time and didnt do any of the readings. if you're looking for an easy a, she's the professor for you, but if you actually care about material, her class will be very disappointed. music of africa and the near east is really incredible but she made the subject so dry. all the material felt so outdated and removed---it was an entirely academic perspective, and a weak academic perspective at that, which is the worst of both worlds since there was no intellect and no engagement to the material. overall i was really disappointed that i didn't learn much of anything. she's really nice and means well, but as a teacher she's really not very good.

Dje Dje, simply put, has no business teaching. Her class is outrageously unreasonable, and she approaches the students in an extremely condescending manner. She is COMPLETELY INEPT at any technology which is unacceptable. Her course listening lists are out of order, mislabeled, poor quality, and numerous (there were over 100 for each half of the course). There are no lecture slides, she simply writes on the whiteboard and puts things in any old place, abbreviations, erasures; DjeDje is completely ineffective as a lecturer. WE HAD TO EXPLAIN TO HER WHAT A DRUM MACHINE WAS. Her assignments are unreasonable, her lectures do not cover anything in the massive reader and only selective material in the reader is covered on the exams. The course is a combined major and GE course, we take different tests but share a grading pool and yet there is no normalization for TA's/Tests/etc... (i brought this up in lecture and she does not even know what normalization is). Her grading is extremely biased and unfair. I would get poor grades on papers with virtually no markings on them aside from things like "Pejorative, Biased, Westerner" in relation to the author of the paper (See: the student). Dje Dje has created a negative, unfair, and unreasonable learning environment. Since when has education become about ANYTHING other than the students? DjeDje's class is all about the obfuscation and belittlement of US. SHE MUST BE FIRED!!!!

This teacher is the worst teacher at UCLA. She is very unorganized and does not know how to teach. She teaches things that are not relevant and doesn't help her students. It is not just me, everyone in the class feels the same way. I've talked to a lot of people and they cannot stand her. She makes things way to difficult and the overall course is horrible. I WOULD NOT take this class if I were you.

AVOID DJEDJE AT ALL COSTS. The classes are boring....almost half the class falls asleep. Material is very difficult to understand. Her whiteboard looks like a football play after she's done writing on it. She does NOT teach the material but make it even more difficult to understand in the first place. Also, listening examples and tests are ridiculous. How is one supposed to remember over 100 listening examples and what region they come from? If you can...avoid DjeDje. Worst teacher ever.

lots of reading, scattered notes during lectures and just a painful 2 hours of lectures...her term paper requires a detailed outline due before the paper is written which is really nitpicky...just write everything you want to write in your paper...answer all the review questions she gives you on the sheet and listen to all of the listening examples she gives you...alot of work and confusing...take it with Racy if you can!
