I’m not gonna lie, when I took 30a, I thought that it couldn’t get worse. However, Jane got out a pickaxe and drove her electric scooter past rock bottom. While Jane is a very fun professor, she is not very clear in her descriptions of class materials, and all in all attending lectures is not very useful except for sitting next to someone who actually understands what is going on. The homework often does not reflect what we are learning in class, and the tests to be honest don’t either. All in all, I would have to say that you should only take this class if you absolutely have to, and if you do, please take Jane’s class purely so that you can attend Problem Solving Sessions. The TAs and Las are very knowledgeable and helpful, and this is an excellent resource for learning the material (despite the fact it is supposed to be a review). Labs are fairly straightforward with coding, but they are very particular on what they want to see, so make sure to check with your TAs to make sure you are doing it right. I would not retake this class, but it helped to make me appreciate spring break, when I can finally dissociate it away, all the more (pressure makes diamonds smth, smth).

I TELL YOU I AM THE BIGGEST HATER OF EVERYTHING TO DO WITH THIS CLASS. WORST START TO MY CAREER AT UCLA. My TA, Pranav, constantly made my group feel worthless all throughout the coding, because if you think you will be prepared from 30A, no. I was a beginner at coding because it is never said it is a prereq or anything...but I was so confused every section and the only goat that got me through sections was Daniel our LA. The final was hard as hell even though I studied endlessly, some of the concepts had to have been written from the other Professor because Jane never went over it.

I will say that if you try your best to sit in front during lecture and PAY ATTENTION, Jane is not entirely the issue here. While, yes, the students are so disrespectful and talk over her, she is not a horrible Professor and is extremely sweet and accomplished (you must give her props for this). This class is a load of BS and I don't necessarily know if doing it with Bennoun (he is more thorough with the material) would have helped with exams.

Homework is pretty simple and based mostly off completion so that is good and workload aside from that was doable besides the ass labs. I'm just glad its over it was hell.

AVOID THE LS30 SERIES AT ALL COSTS. This series is consisted of fake math and it's honestly so boring. The final for this class was almost impossible considering the material we were taught in class. Jane did not prepare us at all for it. Also, the labs for this class were extremely hard and depending on how helpful your TA is, you will be very confused. I am so glad to be done with this series and would not wish it upon my worst enemy. Please do yourself a favor and take another math series!

PLEASE whatever you do, do NOT take her class. If you need to take LS 30 do not have her as your professor. She's a nice professor but I will say that she doesn't teach the material to the degree that the other professors do. Which means that when you take a final or a midterm you are going to see topics that she didn't teach. If you are expecting this to be an easy class I can promise you it is not. I had her class for 30A as well and the midterm we were completely screwed with the class average being 60% because she didn't teach most subjects on that test. It was so bad that she curved everyone's grade. This class you have to do a capstone project and it's fairly easy so don't stress about it. As long as you stay on top of homework, participation, and your labs you will pass the class. This is coming from someone who failed both test this term. If you can take any other professor I'd highly recommend. Also, it can be really hard to understand her most times and her test are just super unfair. This has been the worst class I've ever taken. A lot of the people I talk to about LS 30B who have other professors don't absolutely hate their lives like those who took Janes section. I hope this saves you!

ABSOLUTELY NOT AVOID HER. She is inconsistent with uploading materials and is very hard to understand. People would just talk over her and leave when she was still talking so it was pretty clear people don't like her. Even though she is incompetent at lecturing, self studying for this class wasn't too difficult either. Do the practice midterms and synthesize the slides (that she is very slow at posting) into notes. Be able to explain concepts, even the smallest details like oscillations and chaos. The practice midterms were similar to the midterm but of course actual midterm may be a little harder, average was a C. The final was hellish with some problems being concepts we never did.
Conceptually, I found this class easier than LS30A, same with the coding until the last 3 weeks. The capstone project isn't that difficult either just stay on task. Shout out to my TA Bella who helped so much with coding, our understanding and recapping the content we learned, she is excellent at teaching. Homework can sometimes be long, 1-2 hours but is manageable, just don't procrastinate. Overall, I wish I took another professor as she was bad at explaining and hard to hear.

Don’t take the ls30 series if you can tbh it is not real math. In all honesty Steve or Jane are both not amazing. Honestly get rid of this department!!! They teach you how to the most basic examples and then pull some trick on the final. If it weren’t for my plf I do not know what i would do. Bring back regular calculus!!!

Don't listen to what anyone else has been saying, they are all haters! Shevtsov has been a joy to share the lecture hall with and I wouldn't have anyone else teaching me this quarter. The capstone project was a great bonding experience with others, and I have never felt such affinity to my peers during a lecture ever! Highly recommend that you take this course and make lifelong friends with those around you. This will be the easiest and most fulfilling class of your life. Please please please take my word and not the fake haters and enroll enroll enroll in this class! That's all from me, signing out!

Honestly, while this class wasn't too difficult, it felt like Professor Shevstov did everything in her power to make it harder for students. The homework isn't too difficult, and there are many forums to get help, but the exams were completely disjointed from the content covered in the lecture. When they make up 65% of your grade, it can be really difficult to succeed in class. For our midterm, a different professor wrote the exam, and it covered content that Professor Shevstov had yet to cover in class, leaving us completely unprepared. On top of that, since the other professor wrote it, the question formatting was completely different than what we had been exposed to thus far. You can't even skip her lecture to go to the other professor's because she requires attendance. I will say, that if you work hard, and study well, it is definitely possible to do well in the class, but I would definitely recommend working with your LAs who have taken the class before, and seeing if you can get the other professor's practice material. The way I was able to get through this class was by working with my PLF who covered Bennoun's (the other professor's) content, and studying his recorded lectures.

i attended pss sessions. however, it was difficult for me to get individual help sometimes because they were crowded. i will say and emphasize this a lot: TAKE THIS CLASS WITH BENOUN. benoun had a large hand in writing our midterm and final this year, but i discussed with students in his class and there were definitely discrepancies between what we were taught in our class vs his classes. while i think profs can collaborate on exams, i do think it's not reflective of your own class if you don't write your own final. unlike the previous reviews, i'd say that exams weren't like practice tests.
additionally, benoun and shevstov used different materials/different books, meaning while there was consistency in the materials we were given, it's not fair (in my opinion) to test students as if they were given the same resources. many of shevstov's students struggled in the midterm and i think it's because of poor preparation. they shoved a lot of the harder material in the last two weeks, and it's difficult to fully grasp. my nsa recommended me to take this class because of med-school reasons (ie. med schools wanting 3 years of math) despite me having credit already, and i do regret taking it in opposition to a practical math class.
pss questions were more reflective of the final if anything. i would not trust the practice tests because they were easier. also this is a percentage based class and largely depends on how well you perform on tests. shevstov, by all means, is a nice professor but the class could've been handled better. additionally, labs rarely expanded on my learning for the math. i do rec you going to the lab sessions because labs are graded on accuracy, but if your lab group isn't great, then your experience in labs won't be great either.
