Dr. Sumner was the absolute best. The material is interesting and will serve you in the ling run. She doesn't require you to read over a dense textbook but instead asks you to read timely articles that teach you relevant information. Her exams are doable and fair as long as you review the slides and read all the reading assignments. The two papers involve reading articles and answering some questions about the purpose, IVs, DVs and statistical analysis. As long as you write legitimate answers, you should be fine. For the peer review manuscript paper, you criticize an article and point out any limitations. Start the paper early and break down each part. She is reasonable and wants you to succeed. Participation matters so go to class and engage in the Campuswire discussions as earns you EC. The most amazing thing about this Dr. Sumner is how much compassion and support she offered as we were all facing the stress of COVID-19 pandemic. She allowed us to opt out of the final exam if we were happy with our current grade which relieved a great deal of stress. She made sure to give us daily updates and made herself available on Campuswire every single day. Take her if you want to learn useful information and feel respected and supported by your professor.

I really enjoyed this class! Dr. Sumner was a great lecturer, she was very clear and broke down topics. The readings for the class are super light, and she uses short popular press articles that are easily digestible. The tests were multiple choice and easy. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she was very compassionate and allowed students to make the final optional. She really cares about student learning and I considered what I learned valuable and applicable to my life.

Dr. Sumner is one of the best professors I've ever had at UCLA. Her genuine passion and excitement for health psychology was so evident from day 1. The material is SO interesting and engaging and has reshaped the way I view healthcare. Tests are totally doable if you study the slides and pay attention: she's really not out to get you and you can tell she just wants students to learn something valuable! And again, she herself is so approachable, intelligent and just has an overall positive energy. Can't recommend her enough!!

Quarter: Winter 2021
Grade: A+

Professor Sumner is THE sweetest and most understanding professor I have had. She provides asynchronous lectures twice a week which are so fun to watch and listen to. She does not have a monotone voice whatsoever and she's just so great and her class is very enjoyable! I recommend this class to everyone!!
Breakdown of the class:
Participation: 5 pts
Reflection assignments: 10 pts
Exams (TOP TWO OF THREE!): 50 pts
Journal club worksheets: 15 pts
Written manuscript peer review: 20 pts
Extra credit: 3 possible points
All of the assignments are so fun to do and her exams are very straightforward. There is no textbook for this course, but she does provide articles to read, which are short and interesting. If you pay attention during lecture, you're guaranteed an A. But this class isn't just about getting an A, you will learn sooo much from professor Sumner!!! TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HER!!!!!

TAKE THIS CLASS! I cannot recommend it enough. I found the lectures to be engaging (they are asynchronous) and the material was very interesting. The exams are straightforward. As long as you watch the lectures, pay attention, and do the work, the path to an A is easy. Dr. Sumner is a great professor and very friendly. Take this class if you want an easy upper division Psychology course.

Professor Sumner's Health Psych class was one of the most interesting classes as I am also a healthcare worker, I learned a lot of new information that I didn't know before. Her class was manageable, DO NOT MISS the easy points you get from posting your weekly questions and responses via PACKBACK, those points will save you. I got a low C on my first exam, and one high B and an A on the final. She drops one exam which was so helpful. I found the exams to be a little tricky and challenging at times but after each exam I reflected upon how I can do better on the next. I did do the extra credit and got full points on my assignments and still got an A+ but I absolutely worked for it

Quarter: Winter 2025
Grade: A+

This class is still a free A, so I would recommend taking it if you are looking for an easy upper div to take/need to finish out requirements for psych or psychobiology. There are a few main assignments in this class. Throughout the quarter, there are three journal club worksheets, each making up 10% of the final grade, graded on completion, so these should be free points as long as you turn them in on time. There is also a research reflection assignment due at the end of the quarter that is worth 20% of your final grade. As long as you follow the checklist, you should get full points (the mean for Winter 2025 was 19.81 with a median of 20, lower quartile of 20, upper quartile of 20, low of 0). I would recommend going to office hours and just having it quickly glanced over by the TA before turning it in if you are unsure. The exams in this class, unlike previous quarters, were in person. They were around 40 multiple choice questions each, each exam being worth 25% of the final grade with only 2 out of 3 exams counting so one exam effectively gets dropped. Lastly, there is a generous amount of extra credit in this course. You have 2.5 points guaranteed, with an additional 0.25 or 0.5 extra points depending on what percentage of the class completes the end of course evaluations. You get one point for participating on campuswire (125+ reputation points), one point for getting at least 3 SONA study credits, and half a point for doing the end of course evaluations (as stated previously, if 80% of the class does it, you get an additional 0.25 points, and if 90% of the class does it, you get an additional 0.5 points). To study for the exams, it is sufficient to just look through the slides and memorize as much information as possible. Honestly, I barely put any effort into this class and still ended up with an A+ and didn't have to take the final.
