Quarter: Fall 2017
Grade: B+
Nov. 12, 2018

Westbay is such a fantastic professor! I have hated English classes all my life, because I always felt like they were a waste of time, except for this one. She is super helpful in her one-on-ones, as well as office hours, and has a really engaging and funny personality. Although the actual content of the class wasn't necessarily easy or interesting to me, I always looked forward to her class. I would certainly recommend anyone who needs to take English Comp 3 to take it with her.

Dr. Westbay is an excellent professor who truly inspires you to become a better writer. She gives copious amounts of feedback, and her grading is fair. I thought EngComp 3 was going to be my least favorite course but it turned out to be the most engaging and inspirational class for me this quarter. Take this class, and you'll leave a much better writer, no matter what grade you earn.

She is the sweetest lady. I failed ENGCOMP 3 my first quarter at ucla with some horrible professor. I took her after to retake the class and loved it. Everything she asks of you is reasonable and grading is fair.

I had Dr. Westbay in 1985-86 year. So I am dating myself, ha ha ha. She was then known as Dr. Bradley. I found her class very helpful, being a student from the inner city who couldn't write worth anything. Her comments, in my humble opinion, were sincere, helpful, and right on point in order for me to improve my writing. I felt that she really cared about me improving my writing because none of my other professors would write me an essay back telling me how to improve my paper. From what I remember she was strict about grammar usage and punctuation. But aren't all English Composition teachers like that or at least should be?

she's ALRIGHT. if you need to take english comp 3, you won't really be hurting yourself by taking this class. i hardly spent any time on the assignments, came to class late or didn't even show up, and got an A-. that being said, i am a strong writer and for those in my class that were not as strong, this class was more difficult. her office hours are helpful and she's really nice. from what i remember there were 3 papers, each about 4 pages long (not too sure...), and you write multiple drafts of the paper throughout the quarter. the reading material and movies were pretty interesting, so class wasn't particularly boring.

overall, i give her a B as a teacher. nice, accessible, pretty good.

I don't feel like my writing really improved too much in this class. Professor Westbay is extremely nice, but in my opinion she is not the best teacher. The essay topics are confusing and frustrating - often times I did not know exactly what she was looking for. And as others have pointed out, she was not too much help during the conference sessions. The homework assignments are annoying but my roommate had another teacher for English Comp 3, and he seemed to have significantly more work than I did, so I guess it could have been worse.

The grading system that she uses can be a blessing or a curse. Basically, you have to write rough drafts for all 3 essays. But then you get to choose between essay #1 and #2 to be graded (essay #3 is mandatory). So, only 2 essays are actually graded. However, instead of being due throughout the quarter, they are both due at the end. That means you have the whole quarter to revise, which is nice in a way, but it also means that you really have no idea how well you are doing in the class until you get your final grade. The 2 essays are worth 20% each.

In addition to the 2 essays, there is a midterm and a final. Our midterm was a rhetorical analysis of a speech and our final was a rhetorical analysis of a movie. These were both 20% each as well. The last 20% was the short homework assignments.

She's not a horrible teacher, but the class can be pretty boring. And considering it was early in the morning, I had a difficult time staying awake. I managed a B+ in the class, which I am not exactly happy about, but considering the amount of work I put into the class (not much), I'd say it's fair. Basically, if you are naturally a good writer, you'll do fine. If you are a south campus major who does not like writing, like me, then you will probably struggle a bit.

okay, she does not suck that much, but still, the class is incredibly boring, and her voice is boring as well. I don't want to sound like I am complaining, but given that the class IS eng comp 3, it could have been easier. I mean, she is not clear at all when she tells you how to fix your essay. And even when you fix it, she still gives you a B. I felt like no matter how hard i tried, I would still get a B. And of course, I was right. I guess a B+ never hurt anyone, but had I known this class was going to be harder than it was supposed to be, I would have taken it with another professor. If you HAVE to take her, then do so, but don't expect an A, because unless she absolutely loves you, she won't give you one.

so when people say not to take westbay, theyre on crack
just look on her grade history.
most of the students are getting As and Bs
i bet only the slackers got Cs and now theyre complaining on here
Westbays topic of disability is really boring, but i managed to do ok on the essays
and im a South Campus major and i suck at writing.
The only thing i wish she did, was further explain what was wrong on our drafts, but other than that, she does give you a better grade than you deserve on your essays, which helps you in the end.
