Professor Acevedo is by far one of the best poli sci professors I had at UCLA. He is very friendly, eager to teach, always prepared for lectures, always willing to answer any questions and is very helpful during office hours. He made lectures interesting by incorporating current events in Latin America, relevant videos, graphs and interesting/funny stories from his trips to Latin America. He assigned us many Economist articles so that most of the readings would not be dense.
He is also a fair professor and really wants students to do well in his class, so he provided a reading guide, which consisted of a list of questions for each reading/topic covered in the course. The reading guide was VERY helpful because he only tested us on material included in the reading guide and he made sure to answer the reading guide questions during lectures.
I highly recommend taking Poli Sci 124C with Professor Acevedo!!

Poli Sci 6 was not bad at all. Midterm is only 20% and homework is 10%. R code in the beginning can be very confusing but in order to get an A you need to review all his slides/ go to office hours. I found his office hours more helpful then his actual lectures. He is a very easy going person and teaches great. Homework is very straight forward and he gives all the R-codes so all you do is copy and paste. The difficult part was knowing the math and remembering the steps for tests.

Twas my favorite class this quarter and will be taking Acevedo again!
Acevedo makes a usually boring subject (intro stats class) at a godawful time (8am) and makes it pretty damn interesting.
Class features:
1. bruin casted but only his voice oddly enough (which I find funny)
2. 3 hw assignments, 1 midterm, 1 final, 1 data project
3. Front loads class: the beginning is more material dense than the end (which is nice when the end of quarter rush to get shit done happens)
4. Is super super willing to help students understand the material
5. makes class interesting by providing contemporary examples
6. Is non-pretentious and great at explaining things
7. The midterm and final are based on stats questions and are not that hard if you know that and don't study your R code
8. He loves trick answer choices, so on midterm and final make sure you're doing shit right (which I think makes most people believe his tests are hard which they're not).
9. Gives R-code for all HW assignments so don't be intimidated by the "coding aspect" of it
Also quick shoutout to Estefania, try to get her as a TA she sacrificed a shit ton of extra time to help people with R code and midterm/final review, great TA
Take Acevedo!

When the class first started I was worried I would fail because of the R program but Prof Acevedo and the TA will explain everything and are very helpful. The subject itself was hard for me but Acevedo did a great job of explaining every throughly.

Prof Acevedo is a good lecturer overall, and is very interesting and will keep you awake in an 8am class. I would totally recommend anyone who has to take PS6 to take it with Acevedo.

The readings are a little dry and somewhat repetitive but lecture is always very interesting and Acevedo will add his personal stories which are funny and actually relate to the class. This was my favorite class and he is one of the best professors I've had at UCLA. Would recommend to take one of his classes

I must disagree with the review below. I thought the class and the professor were very straightforward. It's not intense statistics. After all, the class is called statistics for POLITICAL SCIENCE MAJORS, not statistics for math majors. There's definitely a learning curve for the statistical program R, but once you get the hang of it, it's really simple. The professor and TAs are always willing and able to help you with R. That being said, it would probably be helpful to make friends in the class to do your coding together.

The midterm and final were multiple choice. Jesse doesn't really try to trick you with the questions. Maybe one or two questions that you need to read carefully, but they're all very, very doable.

Overall, I'd recommend this class and professor. Not time consuming at all. One of the easiest classes I've taken at UCLA so far.

Just like previous reviews have been saying Prof Acevedo is great! Only warning is don't be intimidated by what he tells you in week 1 about the class is hard. I almost dropped but glad I stayed. A lot of people do tend to drop but if you work on some of the data essay's together then it should not be hard. DO REMEMBER YOUR STEPS ON HOW TO CODE. It is important because your final project uses all three data essays together. My favorite part is learning how to use the R Program. The class has 3 data essays, a midterm (multiple choice), Final exam (multiple choice), Final project.

I would definitely take the class with him again. He makes data interesting and uses fun stats for us to use and play around with.

Jesse Acevedo is simply not a good lecturer. Bottom line. I took this class as a requirement to be admitted to the Political Science major. He reads right off of his slides and his monotone voice will put you to sleep. We spent a good portion of the class using the computer program "R-Studio." A lot of students were surprised when our midterm was made up of mostly statistics questions and not a lot of R questions. I went to his office hours a few time to get help, and he just wasn't clear with what he wanted. The TA's were no help to. I couldn't even understand mine and the other one just wasn't very approachable. I went to class/discussion everyday, averaged a B+ on the data projects, and got C's on both the midterm and final. Ended up with a C+ in this class. I would not take another class with this guy.
