In place of homework/Mastering Physics, Dr Pilgram holds weekly quizzes, and each quiz is a question selected from assigned textbook problems. In a sense, this made preparing for quizzes the most stressful part of the class. The class is heavy on content, so discussion sections were useful (especially since we had to submit discussion problems. She is a decent lecturer overall considering how new she is, and is pretty receptive to feedback.
Jessica Pilgram is a very kind person. However. She cannot teach very well. She tried really hard to teach because it was her first ever class, but she wasn't very good at explaining concepts and mostly read off her slides.
She was aware of this and increased her office hours to answer questions, which I appreciated a lot. She is very nice and tries her best to help people. Exams and grading were extremely fair and she curved the final and midterms.
This was an extremely hard class, and I didn't learn much. The midterms and final were a lot harder than anything we'd done in class or for homework, or even the practice exams. The professor had to end up curving the final significantly to maintain a B average. If you're taking 1b with Pilgram, make sure to do the homework because the quizzes are directly from them. I don't know what to say. I have no words. Try to avoid taking this class. - sincerely, a 1c student.
