I took EDUC 35 with Professor Martinez-Fernandez in the Fall of 2023 in person. EDUC35 was a pretty difficult lower-division class. The course heavily relied on textbook readings and different articles/case studies. Professor Martinez-Fernandez was organized but not clear with assignments, he also loves to randomly call on students during lectures so be prepared! EDUC35 was a challenging course, consisting of multiple quizzes, weekly group assignments, and one group project. The course is research heavy and some concepts were difficult for me to understand but as long as you are on top of your assignments and study hard you will be fine.
Professor Martinez is a great teacher and my favorite so far in college! He is professional, caring, patient and always responds fast on slack, which we used for the course. The lecture content is very useful and interesting to consider thoroughly and talk about. He also pays attention to the interaction among students which is great and helped a lot with both the class the our college social network. He is also very friendly and would like to hear everyone’s idea no matter whether they are right or not. He really inspires and encourages us a lot! Although you may find the lecture a little boring at the beginning, I bet you will love it later when you start to look seriously at all the issue discussed and think about them!
The class was online, so my interactions with the professor were minimal. The way the class worked was he would post multiple 8-10 min lecture videos for each week, and at the end of each video he would say "now go answer question __ on the lesson log!" which directly pertained to the short lecture video. It made the lecture and the homework very interactive, but also meant you had to watch and do the assignment every week. The material was interesting and applicable, and the professor was really nice and helpful in office hours. Everything is graded by TA and discussion was mandatory attendance and participation. There were group assignments that had to be completed as well but they were pretty easy. Your TA matters more for this class but the Professor Matinez-Fernandez was really cool and nice and I would for sure take another class with him in the future. If you take this class, go to his office hours at least once, he is super fun to even just chat with.
This class is not a complete walk in the park, especially if you have no prior background in research. His lectures can lead into rambling, and they're hard to engage in; there's lots of talking at you. His quizzes can be worded weird and are overall unclear. Most of the assignments require annotating dense research articles, which can be interesting, but are not always an easy read due to the heavy research jargon. All that being said, I did learn in this class, and completed it with an A. My best advice is to find people to study with for the exams, and work on the homework assignments together, not individually. It's not easy, but it is informative.
I would highly recommend people to take this professor! The lectures were always fun and exciting. All of your assignments are done with your group members, I found them extremely useful, and they helped me prepare for the final! You have two random pop quizzes, all multiple choice, and 2-3 short answers; as long as you pay attention to the lecture, review the slides, and slightly do the readings, you will pass the course with an A! Oh, and the cheat sheet assignments are preparing you for the final, same concept.
This was class was extremely useful and easy. I took it during COVID so it was online. We had weekly recorded lectures with an assignment due (which was time consuming) along with a weekly discussion section and assignment. The class was a fair amount of work but it was not hard work. The professor and the TA's are great and helpful. I would recommend!
