Just saw that Jose is teaching 32A again so I'm leaving this review. While it has been a year since I took this class, I can still say that he is the best math professor I've ever had. Take his class if you can.
Great professor and someone you should take for a class like this. While homeworks could be a bit tricky, he offers to solve them in office hours. Notes do go by the book, but he usually provides alternative proofs to various theorems which helps with understanding. Exams were fair and he never tried to trick you. They were based off of in class examples and homework problems. I wish he were teaching 131B because he did a great teaching this course.
I'm not sure if I'm the only person who feels this way. Professor Yanez is a great, helpful, and ethusiastic lecturer. Oftentimes, I have no ideas on how I should prepare and study for his test. I do all his suggested problems after every class. However, I often feels like there are so many types of question that I do not know what to focus on when I'm trying to review everything before class. I'm the kind of person who would go to TA's office hour quite often, and go to Prof Yanez's last office hour before the midterm. However, none of my tests were at least A-. Prof Yanez is great, but I have no idea on study strategy for his test.
very organized class and the professor posted amazing notes after each class! attendance was all optional and very little homework. the test questions were all very fair. in general, definitely choose this professor if you have the option to!!!
I highly recommend this professor for Math 32A. He is an extremely good lecturer and you can tell that he really understands the material both conceptually and mathematically. All the lecturers are recorded so you don't need to necessarily be in-person but it really helped me focus when I attended the lectures because he's so passionate about teaching. He makes sure to explain all the concepts/equations both geometrically, conceptually, and mathematically so as long as you're keeping up and answering questions the course shouldn't be too difficult. He's extremely helpful during office hours and my TA (Adam) was also very knowledgable and contributed to my success in this class. There are two mandatory homework problems each week, which don't take long, and a few suggested problems that you can solve for extra practice. The professor doesn't have separate practice midterm questions, but the suggested problems should be enough practice to help review. I would always just solve all the suggested problems the day they were assigned because it helped me ground the material in my brain and ask any follow up questions during OH. The midterm and finals were both relatively easy and extremely straightforward. They're just like homework problems so as long as you keep up you should be fine.
Overall I thought this class was very fair. The test questions are similar to the homework and he gives you all the numbers straight up, no word problems. I got a C on the first midterm but was able to pull my grade back up to an A after the second midterm and final. He also can drop your lowest midterm to be only 3% of your grade which is very helpful. Prof. Yanez is also a very clear lecturer. I found that doing the homework right after lecture helped me retain the information best. I'd also highly recommend doing the suggested problems because even though they aren't required they are very similar to what will be on the exams.
Professor Yanez is a very passionate and efficient instructor! He is always positive and tries his best to help all students. He is very organized, as he consistently posts the lecture recordings, notes before and after lecture, and suggested problems. For Math32A I highly recommend you keep up and do the suggested problems the day of or the day after lecture! It's a lot to go over all of them right before midterms. Go to office hours, he's very helpful and will walk through difficult problems with you!
Midterms are very reasonable; keep in mind there aren't that many questions (as the test is only 50 minutes long) and the professor isn't evil and won't put a completely weird question in there.
