Professor Lisovsky is probably the best english teacher I've had; he paces the class well and explains concepts very clearly. He gives out a fair amount of reading and homework, but they are completely manageable and graded on completion. There are four essays we have to write every quarter which are based off of topics discussed in class and in the readings. Aside from the last essay, all essays can be reviewed as many times as necessary. If you want a good grade, GO TO OFFICE HOURS and have him review your essay. Most of my essays started at around the high 80s, but after multiple reviews, they turned into 95s, which is the maximum score he gives out. His two midterms are pretty straightforward and are pretty much a copy of his practice midterms. As long as you go to his midterm review sessions, the midterm shouldn't be too much of a challenge.

I would highly recommend this class to anyone who wants to get better at English. If you are willing to put the effort in, it isn't hard to get an A.

The classes are quite engaging and fun. He is very strict on grammar and writing though, but he every essay except the last one can be rewritten and graded again. The OHs’ are one-on-one only and can get kind of competitive. Overall, I do recommend this class with him. He cares about students, and the class is run properly and efficiently.

Lisovsky is a really nice person and a good lecturer. There is a lot of reading, essays, and small tasks due in this class. The work is often tedious but it does help you with your overall writing skills in the end. He is very helpful and honest about your writings which is good. I liked him but there is a lot of time consuming work for an A in this class.

Lisovsky was great. Class was genuinely very interesting and I enjoyed being in class. We did a total of 4 essays throughout the quarter, each with a different writing style focus, but all based around the same subject. For all essays except for the last (which was due the last day of the quarter), we were given the option to make corrections on our essay, and the corrected essay replaced the original's grade. That being said, this lecturer refuses to give a grade on an essay above a 95, meaning that you will really need to put some effort into your writing if you want to achieve an A. I would totally take this class again.

I am not sure why this professor has such a low rating on Bruinwalk. By far, he is one of the best professors I've had here at UCLA. He definitely cares about his students and their wellbeing.

One thing I strongly encourage for anyone who has him in the future is to use his office hours. It is during office hours you can learn and improve writing. I can recall going to as many of his office hours as I could. During the first few visits, when I brought in papers, he would read them over with me and I'd leave with a paper completely marked up and in need for heavy revisions. Within a few more sessions, when I would bring in even first drafts of papers, I'd leave with fewer and fewer revisions. My point being, these office hours helped me as a writer to not only write, but do so in the clearest and the most stylistically correct way as possible.

I must also point out that students have a chance to resubmit papers after receiving an initial grade for them. The best part is that you can review and revise the paper with Professor Lisovsky as many times as you want before officially resubmitting.

Overall, I would definitely recommend Professor Lisovsky as an English Comp 3 teacher.

Professor Lisovsky is a really good professor , that being said, he does expect a lot from his students. Like many have said previously getting an A is quite hard. You need to be really on top of your writing to get an A. Participation is 20% of your grade, but you still need pretty much all A's on your paper to get an A.

For the record I received a B+

I took English Comp 3 with Professor Lisovsky in Fall, 2014. He is concerned about his students, classes are usually interesting. There is much more work than other classes, but your writing will improve. Go to his office hours, revise your essays. (You can revise each essay for a better grade). It might not be hard getting a B in this class, but getting to an A requires you to work hard. But if you attend his classes regularly, you will get a good grade. Take his advice on writing seriously, follow the techniques that he says. It will give you a good grade for sure.

I took English Comp 3 as well as English Comp 2 with Lisovsky. The themes he implements in his courses are very interesting and sometimes make the class feel more like a sociology course rather than english. His grading, however, is very subjective and can be pretty harsh. He is pretty nit-picky about stylistic issues and grades unfairly based on it. I would not recommend this course if you are trying to get an A. It is not too difficult, however, to get an A- in the class if you do all the work and revise your essays.

I had him for comp 2 and i had to tai whim again for comp 3. HE is an amazing professor. He is funny, lively, and is very concerned about his students. Your grade will depend on the amount of time and work you put into your papers. He give a lot of work but he will make sure you writing improves by the end of the quarter. I learned more with him in one quarter than I did in 4 years of Honors and AP classes in high school. I got a B+ which is not bad. Go to his office hours and he will help ALOT!
