Quarter: Fall 2023
Grade: A

Practice tests and project material (summary/spreadsheet of all the codes for Econ 103 and 104; super helpful for 104!) are available, $30 for full package (negotiable - I'm flexible and nice dw). Email me at *************.

Boswell is pretty nice and extends project due dates if most of the class needs extra time for the group projects. Make sure for your groups, you choose responsible group partners and that you study well for the midterm. the midterm itself wasn't super difficult, but in my opinion, the environment was poorly planned out. She also records and livestreams lectures.

The grade for this class consists of 30% projects (3 projects in total), 30% midterm, which was Wednesday of week 6, and 40% cumulative final. You are allowed 3 double-sided cheat sheets for the midterm and 4 double-sided cheat sheets for the final. I took 103 with Rojas and would definitely recommend taking this class with Boswell if you can. Her exams are much more representative of what she teaches in class, and she gives you lots of study material to help you out. She also records lectures and does Zoom as well. My TA Gladys Teng was great and super helpful as well when it came to helping us understand the material and with project-related questions. The exams are all multiple choice, and there was no time crunch in my opinion, so you have time. She tends to make a lot of them more conceptual, so you really have to understand the definitions and concepts to know how to answer these, which are difficult sometimes. You do not need to memorize any R code for this class. You may need to know how to read certain R-code outputs, but very rarely, and it is usually just looking at a p-value, R-squared value, etc. in an output, nothing difficult. She will also give you a list of what you need to know for exams ahead of time. I found it helpful to do the practice exams and iClicker questions many times and make sure that my cheat sheet had all the information on it that she said would be on the exam. The projects can be time-consuming, but they seemed to be graded very leniently, with the average being in the upper A range, so these help your grade out if you do well. There is optional outside homework, but I did not find it helpful, so I stopped doing it. Overall, I would recommend this class with Boswell.

Professor Boswell is incredibly supportive and understanding of her students. Her lectures are always engaging, well-structured, and easy to follow. She’s also very organized and often goes out of her way to accommodate students and make their lives easier.

I previously took ECON 103 with Professor Boswell and really enjoyed it, so I enrolled in ECON 104 with her as well. Compared to ECON 103, ECON 104 is more conceptual and less math-focused, which made it more challenging for me personally. The group projects were also more time-consuming and complex than those in ECON 103.

While I didn’t enjoy the course content as much due to its conceptual nature, I still believe Professor Boswell is an excellent instructor and a fair grader. I highly recommend her as a professor or a mentor, just be aware that the course material itself may not be as engaging or fun.

Boswell is great at explaining the concepts; however, the course itself is poorly organized by the economics department. The material jumps around from correcting regression model assumption violations to QDV models, then to time series models, and back again to finishing the corrections for the regression assumptions. It also briefly touches on machine learning and panel data toward the end. While each of these topics is interesting on its own, trying to cover them all in just 10 weeks results in only a very basic understanding of the material. In contrast, Econ 103 was a much better learning experience, as it focused solely on least squares regression, covering both the derivation and the intuition behind it, along with practical applications. I would have preferred if this course had focused solely on completing the regression assumption corrections and gone more in-depth on time series and QDV models. Due to how crammed the course was, it didn’t provide enough depth to confidently apply any of the concepts. That said, Boswell remains an excellent instructor and continues to be my preferred choice for any economics course.

Professor Boswell is one of the most fair professors in the econ department. She gives you a list of the topics that will be covered on the exam unlike many others so you're not left guessing what to study. Her exams are tough but fair and projects make up 30% of your grade (everyone gets A's on them). She is very nice and willing to help students so definitely get to know her and attend her office hours!

Professor Boswell is great! I took her for both ECON 103 and 104 and found her to be a very fair professor. Her lecture slides and instruction are pretty straightforward. Grade breakdown: 30% projects (there are 3), 30% midterm (20 MCQ, 3 doubled sided cheat sheets), and 40% final (40 MCQ, 4 double sided cheat sheets). The assignments are all done in R, but you only need to know how to interpret R output during exams. I found the final to be difficult but reasonable and got a 70%. Overall, as long as you do well on the assignments and prepare good cheat sheets you’re good

If you took Boswell for 103 this class is defenitley a lot harder imo. As someone who got an A in 103, I died on the final. Theres 3 projects worth 10% each. Midterm is 30% and final is 40%. I'm not sure about my class, but I know the quarter before I took it there was a downcurve so watch out for that. You get cheat sheets for the midterm and final so make sure you put all the practice problems on there.

Boswell is one of the best professors I've had at UCLA. She truly cares about her students and is very helpful, clear, and understanding. There are 3 projects worth 15% each, 20% midterm, and 35% final. She provides all past midterms and finals since 2021 for studying and allows 3 pages front and back for a cheat sheet for the midterm and 4 for the final. The coding projects aren't very time consuming compared to other teachers and they are helpful for understanding the questions on the exams. Only need to know R for the projects. I recommend taking notes by either copying and pasting the slides beforehand and adding notes during the lecture or downloading the slides and writing notes on them. She records her lectures and does them on zoom so I would type the notes beforehand and listen to her explanations / read the transcript and add those separately to grasp the information more rather than taking notes at the same time she's lecturing (because she can go pretty fast). Definitely take this class with Boswell if you can!!! Also don't need the textbook.

Amazing professor—if you’re taking Econ 104, take it with her. Despite doing horribly on tests (my average was 50% due to a difficult time), I managed to end the class with a C+ thanks to the projects. I strongly recommend her.
