Fall 2020 - This is easily one of the best English classes I have taken. Professor Hartenberger takes the time to make the class interesting even during online classes and truly cares for each one of her students. The class consists primarily of three large essays which she takes the time to meet with you one-on-one to edit and you additionally get multiple revisions to go over it. I initially wasn't too thrilled to be taking an English class, but I can now say I truly enjoyed taking this class.

Winter 2024 - In this class, we wrote an Op-Ed and a Feature. We had a final mini “TedTalk” on the Feature, which can be pre-recorded. Besides the readings, that was it as far as assignments. I found Professor Hartenberger to be the perfect professor. She provides so many resources that help one formulate their writing pieces and we read many interesting works as well. The peer-reviews were a critical part of the class which I also enjoyed. She has mandatory conferences/office hours which are encouraging. She is very uplifting and kind in her review of your work - anyone can walk away and feel like their work is being recognized. One thing I have to say as a humanities major with no science background is that it may be helpful having some topics in mind to write about prior to class, if you find that you need time to come up with ideas like I do. However, I still felt welcome into the class and cannot think of any reason anybody - whatever their background might be, regardless of their writing levels - would not enjoy it.

Winter 2023 - Loved this class! Honestly my favorite class taken at UCLA, really really recommend. The workload was very manageable-- there are readings for each class (which tbh I didn't read but I still could participate in class discussions fine) and weekly writing assignments which don't take too long. The class structure usually consisted of us discussing the readings, doing some writing or editing exercises, and then getting into pairs and editing each others' writing assignments. It's a small class, so you get to connect with your classmates and the prof. The professor is super chill and she was really understanding when I had to miss a class because I was sick. The grading is also really easy-- you start off at an A- and if you do all the work, you stay at an A-. Once in the middle of the quarter and once at the end of the quarter, you evaluate how you think you did in the class and argue for what grade you deserve. again, highly recommend!! I met so many cool people in this class and tbh it is a big reason why I'm applying for the Professional Writing minor :))
