This is easily one of the best English classes I have taken. Professor Hartenberger takes the time to make the class interesting even during online classes and truly cares for each one of her students. The class consists primarily of three large essays which she takes the time to meet with you one-on-one to edit and you additionally get multiple revisions to go over it. I initially wasn't too thrilled to be taking an English class, but I can now say I truly enjoyed taking this class.

She is an awesome professor, who made life easier for the students. Along with some excellent resources, she made classes very engaging and interactive, and not once did I feel bored in the discussions. The homework assignments were engaging and made good use of what she taught in the class. Overall, would recommend her 100% for this class.

Professor Hartenberger is such a nice and helpful professor. Your grade is composed of 3 essays (the first two weighing 30% and the last 25%) as well as participation (15%). She gives plenty of time to complete the essays, and we are required to turn in a draft and revised draft before the completed paper. She meets with us one on one to discuss and review our drafts which is very helpful. We also have class time for peer reviews. In addition to the essays, we have low-stake writings--mostly discussion posts based off of short readings which are only graded on completion. She doesn't teach us much on exactly how to write, but is a pretty easy grader. Overall, I would highly recommend this class and the professor.

Background: I'm a first-year STEM major with little to no interest in humanities who did not take AP Lang or Lit in High School. I took this class during the Covid-19 Pandemic.
I would definitely recommend Laura for English Comp 3. She was really nice, patient, accommodating, and was really helpful! We had 3 essays for this class and had a lot of time to work on them with many opportunities to review them with the professor and receive feedback from both the professor and our peers. The homework is really light, involving short readings and short answer responses that were graded on completion. Laura also did presentations occasionally to teach us about different aspects of the writing process and really emphasized the benefits of developing a process for writing, which I found to be really helpful. I also didn't find it that difficult to pay attention in class. Overall, I was able to perform well in this class and found it pretty painless. If you have the option to take this class with Laura, I would recommend her!

This class is a relatively easy one. Your grade is comprised of 3 essays and a participation category. There is no final for this class. The Professor is often available to the students if help is ever needed. Not much effort is needed if you want to do well in the class. Take this class with this professor if you want a rather easy time with a medium workload

The only proper experience I had with essay writing before this class was from college application essays. So, I was not really looking forward to taking an English class. However, throughout the course, Professor Laura gave really good tips on academic writing and the writing process in general, which really helped me improve my writing skills tremendously.

I absolutely recommend her for Eng Comp 3. I took this course during the COVID-19 pandemic, when all the classes were remote. Professor Laura made the class engaging, interactive, and fun. The in-class discussions were very interesting, and so was the topic for the class. Furthermore, Professor Laura was extremely nice and helpful.

There were 3 long essays, one due each month. During the writing process, we had one-on-one conferences with the Professor, and feedback given during peer review sessions, both of which were very helpful. Other than these essays, in almost every class we had an assigned reading and were supposed to write short paragraphs based on the prompt given, which were graded for participation only.

Overall I really enjoyed the class.
If you are taking this class, I'd definitely recommend Professor Laura!

I loved Hartenberger! She is so nice and the class is fair. Our theme this quarter was technology and AI. We didn't have any textbooks and she posted links to articles we would discuss in class. The articles and stuff she posted weren't bad either and they weren't too long. She would often elaborate after you share your thoughts in class discussions too and ask questions based off the readings, but they were pretty chill questions. It's not like she was trying to quiz you or anything like it would be something like, "do you use social media a lot and how do you think it has affected our daily lives?" It was engaging and we did a lot of peer-editing which not only helped us with our essays, but it helped me make friends. She also had required one-on-one meetings with her for our essays that lasted 20 minutes and class would be cancelled so we could do those meetings instead. We had 3 essays, but the first one was a low-stakes personal essay that she marked as completed instead of an actual letter grade. We also had some discussion posts on the readings. She was a good professor and would definitely be willing to answer questions or help you out. She also said if I needed an extension on an essay, she would be happy to give that to me when I had one of my one-on-one consultations with her for my last essay. I ended up not asking for it and submitted it on time, but it was nice of her to offer since I mentioned I had a lot of other writing projects due near the same time when she asked how I was doing.

Loved this class! Honestly my favorite class taken at UCLA, really really recommend.

The workload was very manageable-- there are readings for each class (which tbh I didn't read but I still could participate in class discussions fine) and weekly writing assignments which don't take too long.

The class structure usually consisted of us discussing the readings, doing some writing or editing exercises, and then getting into pairs and editing each others' writing assignments. It's a small class, so you get to connect with your classmates and the prof. The professor is super chill and she was really understanding when I had to miss a class because I was sick.

The grading is also really easy-- you start off at an A- and if you do all the work, you stay at an A-. Once in the middle of the quarter and once at the end of the quarter, you evaluate how you think you did in the class and argue for what grade you deserve.

again, highly recommend!! I met so many cool people in this class and tbh it is a big reason why I'm applying for the Professional Writing minor :))
