Definitely recommend this class for IDS/Poli sci. Ross is a great lecturer, and is really clear in his expectations, which aren't all too much. We had Perusall readings weekly and had to leave a comment, two midterms consisting of multiple choice (which can be tricky, it's all on the readings), and a 4-ish page essay. The final was optional, which most didn't take because they posted our preliminary grade which most were satisfied with. TAs are great (especially Julian), and they hold helpful review sessions before the midterms.
Overall, Ross is fascinating and would love to take another class with him!
Professor Ross definitely made the quarter easier for us. We had two mandatory exams (which had two parts: open-note timed multiple choice questions and a four-page-essay). The final was optional, and many of us didn't need to take it because we were satisfied with our grades. We used Perusal for the class, which tracks that students read everything. Doing the readings and leaving one comment for each one was part of our grade. The readings were not too heavy most of the time and the professor gave a week to do them. The discussion sessions were very organized. My TA was Julian, and he provided an outline a few days prior, which made it easier to prepare and participate in the discussions. I have learned a lot from this class. I definitely recommend the class and the professor, who is also a great lecturer.
This class was good, professor was also just good. This class was interesting but also all IDS courses tend to be repetitive.
Professor Ross is one of the best instructors I've had at UCLA. His lectures are clear, concise, and enriching. He truly cares about his students understanding course concepts and is fairly flexible and generous with grading and assignments. Highly recommend taking this class!
