I love Professor Moe! She truly cares about her students and tries to make online seminars engaging. She makes sure everyone gets a chance to talk during class, and gives encouraging compliments. Content-wise, we watched The Plot Against America (a mini series), Get Out, and the Blackkklansman, which we were asked to write two essays on. The writing homework due before class usually took me less than 1 hour. Overall, the workload is fair and manageable. One thing to keep in mind is that politics and social justice play a huge part in class discussions and essays, so think twice if you're not that into politics.
I really liked professor Moe. We read the Handmaid's Tale along with a couple other stories. The readings aside from the novel were a fairly interesting and added perspective to what the main ideas of the book were. The class was very well designed holistically, and the final essay wasn't much of an issue with regards to formulating a thesis and backing it with citation. I'm not sure what other ENGCOMP3 classes are like, but this one is worth taking if you've got to get the GE out of the way.
Do the readings, don't cram the essays. It's like any other English class.
Loved the class! Professor Moe really knew how to incorporate everyone into discussions and challenge our ideas in her written and spoken feedback!
Hi everyone! This class is very interesting and productive. As a freshman student, it was easy to adapt and pass the class. Professor Moe is engaged with her students and expects everyone to participate in the weekly meetings. This quarter we had the theme of Art of Resistance, which mainly involve watching three films. For the most part, you read several articles and write a 200-300 word summary. There is a midterm and final paper, which is very important for your grade. If you do good on those two papers, then you pass the class. Here is the Grading Percentages:
Paper 1: 30%
Paper 2: 50%
Homework essays/Participation: 10%
Good Luck!
Class Review
I basically just took this class for the GE credits, but I would definitely recommend Prof. Moe and her classes to anyone out there looking for an engaging class with a passionate teacher. The class overall is what you would expect: an english class with reading assignments, group projects, and papers. However, what may differentiate this class with another english class would be Prof. Moe; as a teacher, Prof. Moe looks after every one of her students, looking to improve their understanding through her lectures or in-class discussions. She sometimes makes mistakes on small things like how far in the novel we are, or assigning the wrong set of reading homework, but those are negligible mistakes that the class simply laughs off. As a STEM major, I would be lying if I fully enjoyed every single day in that class, but I do admit that it could have been much worse had it not been for Prof. Moe.
She is a really good professor, super engaging lectures. I'd highly recommend taking her class if you need an A or an A+. She gives a lot of opportunities for extra credit and even grades your works out of 0 sometimes to boost your score. Manageable workload with 4 homework essays, rough draft and final draft being the only submissions. Sometimes, the homework essays can be a bit tight, especially during midterm season, but it's not too bad. The quizzes in the first three-fourth of the week is also easy. Overall, great class and great professor.
Mrs.MOE's class is always engaging and has a very chill but serious discussion atmosphere. She gave us the topics about the American politics from different perspectives, especially combined with the supplement materials of different artists, journalists, and some politicians. As a Chinese, I really appreciate those contents as they were fresh, but helpful for me to understand the US's politics climates in current time. She is always smiling and talking with students all the time to solve problems each by each, with great help. I really like her grading system that she usually has one quiz about the pre-reading materials that we need to print them out and take to class. The quiz is not hard but time tight. If you read the articles carefully, you can get it out. However, she gives extra points and chance of extra curriculum activities to boost our scores. Overall, her work load was a little heavy for me, but maybe ok for native speakers. I really liker Prof.Moe, and take this class if you can.
Choose this professor if you can. I really love Mrs.Moe's class, where its actually a time period that I can have my mind motivated but relaxed. The strengths should be the class's content that is really connected to the society and our life--politics, humanities, and science. Doc.Moe's really kind and always encourages students in different projects. However, the weaknesses may be the work load that is a little much for me, to real a lot, as I am actually not familiar with the US politics or society situation. Overall, really recommend this course. Doc.Moe gives high scores, and very detailed explainations in homework.
As a biochem major, I dreaded taking english, but Professor Moe’s class was a nice surprise! She’s super kind, engaging, and made class fun even over Zoom. The class focus was Political Violence, with discussions covering both historical and recent events like January 6th, 2021. Professor Moe mixed informative and entertaining content—we read about 4 articles weekly, but also watched shows and movies like The Last of Us, Bridgerton, Vice, and Blackkklansman. I found the workload manageable, even in the 6-week summer format. That said, I really recommend keeping up with material, because we had regular content quizzes and a discussion participation component of our grade. We also had four short essays (around 600 words each) throughout the course and a final paper, which included a first and second draft. Professor Moe graded everything herself, and as long as you thoughtfully engaged with the material, it was easy to do well. My writing improved a lot in Dr. Moe's class, and I’d 100% recommend her to anyone taking ENGCOMP3!
As someone who never liked and was never good at English throughout high school, Dr. Moe made classes and writing tasks interesting. We had to watch one movie every week on average and a few readings that saw the films from different perspectives. If you keep an open mind, the topics are complex and fun to work through :) Participation grades are easy to max out as long as you speak up once every week; there are reading/movie quizzes that are fairly straightforward (loss points can be recovered through an optional essay); four 300-word homework essays are graded pretty leniently; and a final essay which does have to be more analytic and sophisticated to get a good grade. Overall, Dr. Moe is the best professor/English teacher I've ever had (she even brought donuts for us!), would really recommend this class to anyone looking to fulfill writing 1!!
