If you get the chance, I would ABSOLUTELY recommend taking Professor Lu's class. I took both 120A and 120B with him (received an A for both classes) and can confidently say that he will help you learn accounting! He doesn't sugarcoat the difficulty of the subjects but his lecture notes are SOOO helpful and his lectures are pretty engaging. He usually tells anecdotes throughout class and is always super willing to help students with their careers. I was in a difficult situation post-grad and he even went out of his way to speak with recruiters and former students to help give me career advice. The exams are very similar to the problems in the notes so just practice those over and over again. He can be blunt at times but to be honest, if you're looking to go into a career in accounting you need someone to be straight with you about the expectations of the workplace. He pushes students to do their best and is the reason I ultimately decided to pursue my CPA license. Even if he's a little tougher than other professors, he's very fair and puts in so much effort in writing his exams and lecture notes that if you put in the effort, you can definitely succeed.
Prof. Lu is a very engaging lecturer who pays close attention to the details that really prepare you for the CPA exam. I also had him for Mgmt 120A, and his notes were always clear, well-organized, and easy to follow. I highly recommend keeping those notes, as they will be a really helpful resource when you’re studying for the CPA exams.
Also don’t let the class's grade distribution intimidate you. Although the tests are challenging, Prof. Lu covers all the material in depth during lectures, so if you attend lectures and put in the work, you will be well-prepared. Don’t be discouraged by your first midterm grade either. Accounting is a skill that improves with practice. Prof. Lu truly cares about his students and is always available for support, whether it’s for accounting help or career guidance.
Overall, I really recommend taking him for the intermediate accounting series. His teaching helps you build a strong foundation in accounting, and he is always approachable if you have any questions along the way.
Professor Lu is amazing. He is extremely passionate about teaching and his students greatly benefit as a result. While this is a very challenging course - one of the hardest courses in the accounting minor - he accommodates his students in any way he can through things like access to TAs, office hours, fair exams, and extensive career advice. I am very grateful for my experience with Professor Lu as I have gained an invaluable set of accounting skills and am now on an excellent career path due to his teaching and much of his advice. I highly recommend this class to anyone as the professor truly cares about his students. I wish I could take him for all of my classes here at UCLA!
He is one of the best accounting professors in UCLA. He tries a lot to clarify problems and answer questions from the students. Exams were straight forward if you know how to solve homework and in-class problems.
MGMT 120B is definitely more quantitative and challenging than MGMT 120A, but Professor Lu makes it more accessible. He's always willing to help you understand concepts better after the lecture — take advantage of that.
You really get out what you put in for this class. I recommend re-doing back of the chapter and note problems. Since this is probably the last quarter this class will be online, you really need to know everything by heart for in-person classes. It's accounting, so it's just repetition.
The textbook is pointless. Professor Lu's notes are comprehensive and easier to follow. Be ready to put in the hours for this class. Memorization is key.
