Absolutely amazing professor. He's excellent at what he does, easily clarifying even the most difficult of concepts. I've never been good at math, especially conceptual math as opposed to applied math, but Ben Neria made the class enjoyable, interesting, and funny.
I did acceptably well in this class (A-), but for someone whose average math grade is between B and B-, it's actually pretty good, and speaks well for the professor.
I would absolutely take the class again.
Broooooo
You dont even wanna get me started like wtH. I actually hate myself now for taking this class. I used to think I was smart at math, now I dont even know how to think. Like how can one be so incoherent and unclear in such a way that students don't even bother picking up their pencil after 10 minutes into lecture. No humor, no fun, no engagement, no help. If you have to take linear algebra for the quarter he's teaching in, it'd be better to take it your 5th when he's not teaching cuz it is not worth the pain. 0/10 would not recommend.
Ngl, this class was pretty hard. He's a good lecturer, writes down a lot of useful info on the board, his lectures are worth going to, but the tests were still pretty rough. I studied pretty hard, and got an 80% on the final. I felt like I studied pretty hard and knew how to do most problems but when it came to tests, the problems weren't always very straightforward. It's not really his fault tho. I feel like he gave fair problems mostly on the tests, they were just hard problems. As long as you study well, you can make it in this class. Going to lecture is worth it, easier than the textbook. One issue though is that some of the material isn't from the textbook, so practicing those problems for the tests was sometimes kinda rough. TLDR: great lecturer, hard tests.
I love this professor!
Though his lectures are intense because there is always new stuff every lecture, he presents his lecture in a coherent and clear way. He assigns homework with different difficulty level. Though some problems are quite challenging, they are fun and he won't collect the homework. The every week quiz is based on the homework but the quizzes are easy to deal with.
The exam is not that difficult but requires you to compute carefully and check your answer.
Linear algebra is really beautiful and just take this class.
Sitting through one of his lectures is a frustrating and confounding experience. Although he's foreign, his English is fine, but his class consists pretty much entirely of him mumbling through examples with occasional tepid and unsuccessful attempts at clarification. He rarely even faces away from the board; it almost seems as though he intermittently forgets that the class is even there. I bombed the first midterm, but was able to salvage the second one by watching MIT Opencourseware in lieu of attending class. If you get stuck with this professor, I'd recommend that you do the same from the start, as his lectures are completely useless.
Omer is quite a funny professor because of some of his random quirks and his accent. He is an extremely quick chalk user and can somehow manage to scribble matrices and theorems in the blink of an eye, so you really have to pay attention to his lecture all the time, otherwise you might easily miss something that he just said and not even know that he said something important enough to ask a question and clarify about.
According a few of my female peers, he is also quite handsome, so girls, if you're looking for a professor who looks as good as he does math, take his class and you'll find yourself actually learning a lot from being attentive to him, I mean, his lessons.
His tests are pretty fair, but can be tricky at times, and under the time constraints, it can be difficult to answer some of the tougher questions that he sets. His quizzes can also be pretty tricky, so you have to know your stuff from the previous week or you can quickly be lost through the quarter.
You will want to do the homework regularly because every week builds upon the previous week's knowledge, and if at any point in time there are gaps in your learning, there is a good chance that you won't be able to understand the concepts that come next.
As an engineering major, I understood the importance of Linear Algebra in my field, so I made sure to take a bona fide professor so I can get the most from the class. I do not regret taking Omer at all and I wish he taught engineering classes so I could have him again. He was very sweet and understanding, and he made sure to take input from the students before starting to grade the exams. Actually, one day I ran into him after the final and he asked me about the clarity of one of the questions on the final. After I explained to him that the question was a little confusing, he completely removed it from the final! Very rarely will you find such understanding professors in college.
He was quite funny and his nuanced accent added a cute tickle to lectures. Linear algebra could be a dry subject, but he was successful in engaging the class.
In terms of difficulty, the exams were very easy and essentially straight out of the assigned homeworks. We also had weekly quizzes in discussion, which added up to a whole midterm, yet these were free to your score in the class (you get to drop two quizzes).
I feel bad for anyone who is unsuccessful in enrolling into his class. You're missing out.
I had a pretty low interest in Linear Algebra before this class started, and had heard horror stories of how hard it was, but Omer made it manageable and extremely enjoyable. Even though I did not perform as well as I could have in his class, Benny (thats what me and my friends call him), was the most dedicated and passionate professors I have ever met. His knowledge in the field can be compared to non-other, and he often makes himself available for review session before tests.
On a side note, his TAs are phenomenal, the best I have ever had.
11/10 would take again.
Overall, the class itself is pretty "easy". Like a previous post, the homeworks are due on Mondays and consist of 4-5 problems which range in difficulty but in my experience they weren't too complicated at all. (Once I saw a guy finish it in an hour before class started.) The midterms are fair and if you really understand the material, it should come off as easy-medium difficulty. I got a B+ on the first midterm, D on the second midterm, and C on the final and ended up with a C+ in the class. I can't blame my poor grade on the professor, though, because in all honesty I think my TA was just a prick with partial credit. The key to doing well in this class is just do the homework, do the additional suggested homework problems, and read the book if you want a clearer understanding of the concepts! His tests are challenging because of the time constraint but if you know what you're doing you should be able to do well. Although he doesn't take attendance, I think the lectures are super useful to attend because they help a lot with the homework problems (most examples he goes over in class are hw problems just with different numbers). He gives a review session before the final which is nice! He's always willing to answer questions in class and office hours. All in all, I like Prof. Omer and am taking him again for 33B :-)
Go to lecture! The midterms and final are based on the lecture notes - basically just applications of what you learn in class. Also, his lecture notes are really thorough and systematic. I really enjoyed this class!
