Randall is a complete homie! His exams are directly sourced from the textbook, slides, and homework problems. The practice midterms he gives out are predictive of the midterms, however the final is slightly more difficult.
Be thankful to have the legendary Randall Rojas as a teacher!
I stopped going to class after a month. His lectures are exactly word for word from his PowerPoints, which are posted on the class website. I studied for a few hours before each test by going through the PowerPoints and generating MindTap practice tests and got an A on each test. I never even met my TA. There is no need to go to discussion. Homework is one assignment per week which takes maybe an hour.
I had Prof. Rojas for Econ 2 last quarter. I think he's a fair and decent professor. The book for the class is required (around $120) since it has an online code (Mindtap) where you do the hw. I found the homework really easy, as some questions are word-for-word from the book. I think Mindtap is not worth it overall; it is not that great to study for. Class consists mostly of slides, and he'll explain the concepts pretty well. He also follows the format of the book. It can be boring in class sometimes, but Econ2 overall is not the most fun thing to learn. Due to the nature of the subject, a lot of people decide not to go to the class, since the subject is relatively easy. Midterm 1 is really easy, Midterm 2 is a bit difficult, and Final is much harder than expected. But he grades fairly, and curves the class only if it helps (it did help). It's an okay class overall; if you want to get a good grade, you don't have to study too hard.
Rojas was an extremely helpful professor who really tried to engage with students to make sure they understood before he moved on. While his lectures can drag a bit (I had an 8 am so it was tough staying awake) I definitely recommend going as he explains the subjects very well. There are weekly hw assignments that aren't too bad, and those questions resemble the midterm questions almost exactly. Not a difficult class if you go to lecture and do the textbook readings.
Best professor in the Econ department. He is clear, extremely organized, and so nice/approachable at office hours or after class. He makes such difficult material easy to understand, and is really fair on his exams. The average on the first midterm was a 64% but he said it was lower this quarter because this quarter he did not count homework as a grade, so many people just looked at homework solutions instead of attempting the homework first and then checking if they did it correctly. So a suggestion would be to do the homework on your own first and then check solutions he posts later. You have discussion problems, homework problems, and chapter review questions to work on every week, and although they are not collected for a grade, it can be very time consuming. Midterm 1 is 25%, midterm 2 is 25% and final is 50%. Great class! Just wait to take 103 with Professor Rojas, he usually teaches in winter quarter and he is amazing!
Rojas is easy to understand and makes a sincere effort to get students involved. He is a good teacher, but the tests are tough and the TAs are usually unhelpful so you have to put in your own work on a weekly basis. But going to lecture definitely helped me understand the material because he breaks it down to lames terms very well.
Professor Rojas seemed like the obvious choice for Econ 103, but I was dead wrong. At the beginning of the quarter he announced that he would no longer be collecting homework for a grade, and changed the grading format to 25% for two midterms (50% total) and 50% on the final. He taught the material at a good pace at first, but then after week 5 he started accelerating out of nowhere. He would attempt to hold review sessions, but would never be able to because of "scheduling conflicts." He does not respond to any e-mails, and barely puts in effort outside of the class for students to understand the material. On the last day of lecture, he used the last half of the class to cover a whole chapter of new material which he said would show up on the final.
Rojas is a lecturer, not a professor. he is a really smart guy and knows what he's talking about and tells you everything he knows. but there is no effort to make sure you understand the material or any extraordinary examples that he gives that gives you that "ah ha!" moment. Rojas is a super nice guy though and does make an effort to have lecture slides and such. The TAs are useless. Diana Van Patten was pretty solid though compared to the others. The exams are hard but i managed to get an A- even with a C on the final. THE FINAL CONTAINS A LOT OF INFORMATION FROM POST SECOND MIDTERM UNTIL THE FINAL. i didn't know this and stopped paying attention in class after the second midterm and that screwed me. Overall i would take this class again, just make sure to supplement lectures with the textbook readings because those help a lot, go to class and actually pay attention, do the homework (no reason to not have a 100 for homework average you literally can take it twice and check your answers), and go to discussion. actively participate and keep up and youll be fine.
DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME IN LECTURE. Rojas's lectures consist of him reading off the slides (which are on ccle) and then asking "are you with me?". Instead, I recommend just reading the book and doing practice problems. I went to a total of 3 lectures all quarter and still did well on the tests. But overall, very manageable class and not that difficult.
