I liked the way this class was very chill. The instructor was very chill in his teachings and very passionate. He was also respectful and made sure everyone felt welcomed in class and to ask questions. He is very encouraging and overall, his vibe is very chill and kind.
This was a very easy GE and interesting course. There isn't a very heavy workload. There are weekly reflections based on the readings for the week, most are 300-400 words. I feel that you can definitely get away with not reading everything that is assigned for the week and just focusing on what will answer the weekly prompt and you will still be fine. There is only one quiz that is worth 10% of your grade, it was fill in the blank and multiple choice, if you briefly go over the content you will do fine on the quiz. The midterm and final are both take-home essay's. His in-person lectures may sometimes be redundant, as he usually just reads off the slides but it's still a good class. When I took the course we had pre-recorded lectures on Monday's and in person lecture on Wednesday's. He is also a great professor to talk to, if you need help on your midterm or final he will definitely offer you support.
Professor Romero is super understanding. He is very nice to students and wants to see you succeed. No attendance is required for lecture and honestly you don't need to go to lecture but he does get upset if you leave early. Your grade is pretty much up to your TA but the prompts and all assignments are pretty straight forward. You have to write one 300-400 word response to a prompt relating to a reading every week but you can get away without reading. Midterm and final are both take home essays with simple prompts. One small quiz around week 5 but it is super super simple. Discussion is straightforward and attendance is required for that. One extra credit opportunity provided in the quarter. Overall would recommend, workload is super manageable. Lectures do get repetitive and the professor goes off on a lot of personal stories plus talks slow.
This class is fine, but he is a very good lecturer, nor is he very engaging. He just reads off the slides and doesn't perpetuate any deeper discussions. All of the topics covered are those the professor researched and has experience in, not necessarily those that would make the class well-rounded. I would suggest taking it with a different professor, but you will be fine if you have to take his class.
Professor Romero lectures from the heart - he tells a lot of personal stories that maybe aren't exactly note-taking worthy as you won't be tested on them, but they are incredibly interesting to hear and all tie together to the main ideas and fluid themes of the class really well. He really cares about what he teaches as this is his life's work, but he is very humble and kind, very helpful with students, and completely open to changing the structure of the course to fit student needs. Sometimes the readings are difficult to obtain and take a little bit of internet digging, but they relate really well to the class and are often helpful for expanding the concepts he lectures about. Not a difficult class at all, with weekly reflection and readings, one quiz for the entire quarter (which he gives a study guide for), and two papers (one as the midterm and one as the final). The pace is really calm and the professor along with the TAs are really involved in communication so they're ready to help if you ever need it. 11/10 would take again!
This class was super easy. I didn't really pay attention in lecture and only read one book out of the two required. Just read one book and you'll be fine and take notes on the slides because he doesn't post them on ccle. If you need any of the books from the class (Critical Race Theory or The Latino Threat) message me, I'm selling them for cheaper than the UCLA store **********
I got an A in this class. The workload is much lighter than 10A with Alba, so that's a plus. This professor is super engaging and passionate about his teaching. There were only 2 papers. One in class as a final and a take-home final. If you're looking to buy "Latino Threat," I can sell it for a cheaper price, and I also have pdf versions of some required readings for free. Text me if interested in buying the book or in need of another **********
Really pointless class.
The lecture is completely useless so you can not to go lecture at all.
I didn't learn anything from the class. The professor keeps on trying to appeal to students' emotion on how Mexicans went through struggle, but personally not being Mexican, couldn't really agree or anything. Throughout the quarter, most I have learned is how strong of a victim mentality the professor has.
Grading is whatever. Midterm is easy, and the final is a paper that depends 100% on TA, not the professor.
Overall, would recommend if you are Hispanic/Mexican but not really for other race
This was one of the best classes I've taken at UCLA. Professor Romero helped us breakdown the cases involved in the history of affirmative action. We had great conversations in his class. I find him to be fair and pastoral, even if you don't agree with him. Read the cases, go to class and go to discussions and you'll be just fine. Grading is based off a weekly discussion post, midterm and Final. He did offer extra credit throughout the course, so take advantage.
Honestly Great professor. I've taken 2 classes with him. Class is extremely manageable and interesting. Would take again.
