There were so many readings that were really important when it came down to the exams. There were two essays that we had to write that were very short, but were graded very specifically. He went based on slides the entire time, but he didn't post the slides. Attendance was mandatory.

I really liked Professor Hernandez-Leon. I have taken him for 180 and decided to take him again. The class is made up of 5% lecture attendance, 5% section attendance, 30% midterm, 40% final, and 2 10% essays. The exams are 20 (midterm) and 30 (final) mcq and 2 short-answer questions in each. The mcq can be a bit difficult; he tends to focus on smaller details of the lectures and readings, but if you've gone to the lecture and done the readings, you should get them. Read each question very carefully; he likes to trick you, so if even one part of the statement is incorrect, the statement is false. The short-answer questions are pretty broad, and one tends to piggyback off the essay questions. As long as you understand the material, they should be straightforward to answer. He provides study guides for both exams. In my opinion, they were enough, but make sure your answers are detailed. For the essays, I would recommend going to the TA to see what specifically they are looking for. Overall, this class was incredibly interesting. I loved Professor Hernandez-Leon's lectures, and the workload was incredibly manageable.

His class ruined my experience here at UCLA. His lectures were unbearable, keeping us up until the last minute every session, and they were not helpful at all with regard to our final paper. Our pop quizes killed my final grade. There is a lot of reading material, he has no genuine concern for his students, and basically I think he just likes the sound of his own voice. Unless you enjoy ruining your GPA and spending a quarter wasting your money and time...I would avoid his class at all costs.

DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! WOrst professors ever. Makes you buy his book and read too many pages a night. Lectures are boring and he uses pointless powerpoints for nothing. Class was overall very hard, 3 suprise quizzes worth 30% of your grade, long research paper that requires a lot of outside research. If you don't have a car like me, don't take this class b/c you'll have a hard time getting to your research location. Professor Hernandez-leon doesn't care at all about his students' learning. He'll especially favor u if you can speak Spanish or is Hispanics. The class was supposed to be Sociology of Immigration, but you only learn about Mexican immigration? What happened to all the other immigrant groups? Class was ever disorganized and useless!

Professor Heernandez-Leon is the worst professor at UCLA. What kind of professor gives 3 surprise quizzes worth 10% each? WTF is that about? Not only are there surprise quizzes, but you're required to do a 10-12 page paper on an ethnic enclaves. The paper itself was too time consuming. He does not care about his students and his lectures are boring. Don't take this class if you don't like reading over a 100 pages a night and spending your free time researching your final paper!
