This is one of my favorite classes I've taken so far at UCLA. Professor Redmond is extremely passionate which made the majority of her lectures very engaging. It is important to note that attendance is essential for this class. The TAs took attendance at every lecture and discussion so it is important that you are there on time and stay the whole time. However, lectures often ended early. It is also essential that you stay on top of the readings and assignments, as they can and were collected randomly without warning. As long as you attend all lectures and discussions and use the material from class in your assignments to support your own opinions you will do well.

This class was pretty freaking great. It is now known as MUSCLG 69, a musicology class, but it is still the same great professor and class topic. Professor Redmond is so incredible. Every single on of her lectures was so well thought out like a TED talk. Although it was set in a lecture room of 100 or more, she still sought active participation by asking questions and taking polls by a show of hands. Her musical knowledge is incredible too. Although I was tired most days, this class kept me awake and on my toes. Professor Redmond also finished her lectures anywhere from 20-even 40 minutes earlier. There was only one class period in the whole quarter where she spent the whole lecture time.
Attendance in lecture and discussion is mandatory. Attendance is taking at the beginning of the class period by the TA's.
Discussion was pretty great. Shoutout to my TA Marissa who was so sweet and helpful. In discussion, we went over topics that were brought up in lecture and added onto that by listening to things and watching music videos. We also had listening journals where we had to listen a song of our choice on our own time (how easy) and write a half page to a page analysis of it. I love listening to music and getting to write about the songs we like was super fun. These listening journals were randomly collected either in lecture or discussion and we had to do one entry a week.
There was a take home midterm where we were able to choose a prompt of our choice. This took a while for me to finish and I thought I did bad, but my TA was very open with grading for everyone and understood our point and almost everyone got a good grade, and if they didn't, there was a chance to make up some of the points with a rewrite.
The final project for this class was to create a playlist based on a topic. This was very open-ended and one could have chosen songs that related to any topic (WWII, punk culture, drugs in the 70s, etc.).
This class required effort and attention, but as long as you talk to your TA and attend lectures and discussions, you will do well in the class.

You GOTTA take this class. Not only is Dr. Redmond an amazing lecturer and professor, the work load is super, super manageable. The TAs are also super chill, I had Candace who was really awesome and funny. The only difficult part was one writing assignment toward the middle of the term but the final was a super easy group project. Would take this class a million times over.

MUSCLG 69 with Professor Redmond was a wonderful experience. I feel as if I gained a greater appreciation for the manner in which music conveys its message--beyond lyrics and the "typical sounds" we acknowledge as meaning-laden. The only drawback was that there was only one "lecture" posted each week; I wish there had been two instead so we could dive into greater depth on some topics. My TA (Erin) made discussions fun and useful, helping to explain unclear terms/concepts from the week's readings and lectures (lectures were asynchronous).

The grade consisted of weekly listening journals and provocation responses. Erin let us write the listening journals about anything we wished; you could write about a song you had just heard the past week. Provocations were a little trickier, but Erin helped with facilitating our thought process and helping us attack the prompts. The midterm was definitely doable (2 1000 word essays and 10 fill-in-the-blank questions), while the final was to create a PSA about an issue of our choice, which I thoroughly enjoyed (especially since we could do it in a group).

TL;DR: The class is straightforward and easy with respect to grades, while the material discussed helped me gain greater appreciation for music and its use.

Honestly the easiest and most engaging GE I have ever taken!! Weekly assignments were pretty easy, just writing and responding to how you felt about the weekly material. Professor Redmond is so amazing and such a great professor. Her lectures are short, but very intriguing. We had one paper that did take some time but very manageable in my opinion. The final was a piece of cake, you could do it independently or with a group. My TA Erin was the coolest and I enjoyed going to our discussions (even at 9am on a Friday). I would 100% recommend this class!
