Sheng was probably the worst professor I’ve had. The final was extremely hard and Sheng’s lectures did not even begin to prepare me for it. You are better off never going to lecture and learning all of the material on your own. If you do decide to take Sheng (don't!!!), start studying for the final at LEAST a week in advance -- do all of the practice exams and review all of the homework questions thoroughly.
Professor Sheng is the type of professor who will teach you 1 +1 = 2 in class and give a calculus problem with log and factorials on the exam. Her homework’s are nothing like the material she’s goes over in class (she just rambles on and on and on for 1 hour 15 minutes) and the best part is that you can’t even understand her. Most of the class stopping attending lectures after week 2 but I continued to go, yet it wasn’t much help. Stay away from Sheng, she will terrorize you.
First half wasn't too bad; be warned the homework questions were much harder than examples given in class/lectures. Prof would spend so much time on simple concepts and glaze over the tougher ones you need to know for exams. HW is only graded on completion but is good practice for the exams. Midterm was reasonable, final was extremely hard imo (though I didn't prepare for it as well as I could've). I probably guessed on half of the questions. I'd say do ALL of the practice exams with a timer and make sure you fully understand how to approach the question in order to do well on the exams. Prof is average- she seems like a nice person, but her lectures were very monotone and made me want to fall asleep. I've heard other econ 41 professors are worse though so she might be your best bet. I'm just glad the class is over.
professor sheng is really nice, i think her class isnt too bad, just practice hard, you will get a good grade
Sheng is easily one of the worst professors i’ve had in my life.
Midterm is not droppable, she gives no extra credit, her pace is super accelerated and somehow we still did not cover all the material needed for 103. The examples given in class have 0 correlation with the exam in terms of difficulty. On top of that, her lectures lack any sort of structure (starts a new topic in the last 5’ of lecture) and she is very unclear when explaining the topics.
All in all, just don’t take this class. And if you so happen to be reading is while taking it, your best shot is to memorize the practice tests as the problems are very similar on the actual exam.
You’ve been warned.
First half of the class was fairly easy and straightforward, but then she got tough on us in the last half. Midterm was quite easy, but the final was very difficult. Make sure to go to your TA discussions and office hours. Sheng is also very helpful if you go to her office hours. Selling the textbook, contact **********.
Professor Sheng is a very nice woman, but her lectures were not the clearest. I had taken AP Stats in high school so I had some background knowledge, but she taught certain concepts in a much more confusing way than what I had learned in high school. I thought her midterm was very fair since it was exactly like the practice exams, but it was a bit of a time crunch because we had 1 hour and 15 minutes to do 37 multiple choice questions. The homework questions were much harder than her in-class examples, but they were good practice for exams which included similar difficulty in questions. However, the final was a lot more difficult and I think there was a heavy curve. It was the first quarter in-person in a while and she allowed for 1 page front and back of cheat sheets. The exams had some fair questions but there was also a lot of things that seemed like she hadn't explained. It was a 50 question Multiple choice exam and we had 3 hours, so time wasn't too big of an issue but I did have to guess on many questions that I didn't have time to do. There was also one question that had to be removed from the exam while we were taking it because none of the choices were correct answers so I feel like that wasted some time if people had been working on that one. Someone sent a poll in the groupme after the exam asking how many questions people guessed on, and the winning response was a range of 10-15 questions. Overall, she wasn't the worst professor but definitely not the best.
DISCLAIMER: I have heard that Sheng now requires homework for Econ 41, but she did not when I was in class.
This class is very easy IF you have experience in stats (AP stats, Stats 10, etc.). If not, you'll have to put in a little more effort, but the material is very doable. That being said, Sheng is not a good professor. Her lectures were EXTREMELY dry, consisting of her reading from and directly copying notes on the board. Since these notes are also posted online, I only attended class for the first week and from then on simply studied the online notes. She allows cheat sheets for the single midterm and the final, and all calculators are acceptable. Her exams are all multiple choice and are fair based on her lecture notes. I didn't do any of the optional homework assignments, but I was told that some test questions were taken directly from the homework.
Recap: the class itself is not difficult, but Sheng is not a good professor.
