Prof. Steinberg is one of the best professors I've had. If you're able to get him, do it. He truly cares about his students and could talk to you about the material for hours. He really enjoys when you go to office hours. The essays for the class are not too bad and you get rewrites so you can get an A on each one. He also gives extra credit essays that are very quick.
There is a lot of reading at the beginning, but it's only for a few weeks. He reads over your homework carefully (don't BS it). The essays are based on the reading from the book, so make sure you do it.
Overall, an amazing class with an amazing professor. Would take again without a doubt.

Not sure why people say this class is interesting but it is boring AS FUCK. Literally wanted to kill myself in that class. Attendance is mandatory so FML. Easy A tho, didn't even need to try on essays or read the book. You'll get at least an A- on the first try of essays if you are a okay writer. Just google summaries of the readings and summarize the summaries for the homework. LOTS OF BUSY WORK. Expect to spend at least 2 hours on the homework assignments (there are 2 each week)

Taking English Comp 3 with professor Steinberg was really great. He was extremely helpful in helping me revise my essay. However, the amount of readings we had per week was exhausting.
I'm selling the book Rereading America for $45.

Professor Steinberg is one of the best english professors. I learned alot about writing, but the work load is very heavy. We are expected to write 4-6 entries of reviews of the articles in the textbook every class and each article takes around 2 hours to read and write. I stayed up every night before the class to write article reviews. Reading the textbooks is absolutely necessary because everything is based on what you read. We had two essays and one group project and three movie reviews for extra credit. Also, he is nit picky about writing. You have to be very careful about mla citation, grammar errors and punctuation. Go to his office hours if you flunked your first paper. I got a c+ for the first paper and A- after the revision. It is totally doable but only with alot of time and effort invested in this class.

I'm just going to say this first. English is probably my least favorite subject and as a freshman I wasn't really excited to start my year with ENG COMP 3, especially because I felt like it was my worst subject. That being said, I was really worried about this class and like you (if you're planning to take eng Comp 3) I LOOKED ON BRUIN WALK FOR REVIEWS, and these reviews seem very promising. Having taken the class these are my thoughts:

ENG COMP 3 is a very interesting class. We covered very relevant topics regarding race, gender roles, stereotypes, technology etc. found in the textbook required for the class. His lectures themselves are very chill. We'd start off the lecture with a quote and a five minute free write, discuss with your partner about what it meant and then discuss with the class. He's the type of professor that really appreciates discussion and is open to a lot of ideas, just get ready to explain yourself when he answers back with a follow up question. Participation is not required at all (attendance is mandatory though, and being on time is too, you get docked off for being late and there's a sign up sheet) but he just likes to hear about what you think. Then he'd present some articles from current events he found relevant to the reading that he found interesting. He'd sometimes bring in the newspaper and point out something or bring a few books to pass around. Then you'd get in your groups to discuss the readings. Like I said, lecture is very easy going and encourages his students to speak their opinions.
However... I guess this may be English Comp 3 in general, but the workload is pretty heavy. So every time there's lecture, he assigns about 50 pages of reading and then you have to respond to about 4 of the articles/short stories from the reading. For these homework assignments, he only gave us two assignments back "graded" and the rest of them I bet he hasn't even read. He grades them on a scale of excellent to very good to good to okay etc. Usually if you did all the reading and responded to everything he asked for you'll get an excellent. It's pretty much graded on completion since this portion of your grade is pretty small compared to your essays.
There are three main essays and they're pretty hard since you have to talk about two different topics in each essay. But he usually grades your paper based on how many good points you have, if it makes sense, your grammar and lastly your MLA format. After you submit it for a grade you have an option to revise it for a better grade (usually everyone has to do the revision cause everyone gets the MLA format wrong) it took me a couple tries to figure the MLA out. I had a problem with my first essay and he didn't give me a grade because he couldn't tell the difference between what was my analysis and the evidence's analysis (which makes sense... he's pretty fair) I was really worried at first because it was my first essay and I didn't know how I was doing in the class and pretty much everyone got A's on their papers. After going to his office hours (very helpful 15 minutes!! His handwriting is terrible so he will clarify his revision comments with you then) and asking him to look over my revision without grading during class, I ended up receiving an A on the paper. The next two papers I got As on the first try, but this is because I really developed my argument that wasn't blatantly obvious. He's pretty generous to his grading and with the revision it really saves your butt since you have a second try to get a better grade. Be very open with him and express your concerns because he is definitely willing to help you! As a person he's a very interesting professor and is so nice. I would have loved it if he taught a writing 2 class because I'd sign up in a heartbeat! Personally Professor Steinberg has one of the best reviews on bruinwalk for Eng comp 3 and I will say you won't regret taking his class! It's not an "easy" A in terms of the workload but I think it's a class that you have a good chance of receiving a good grade if you really care about it.

HIGHLY RECOMMEND FOR ENG COMP 3. Professor Steinberg is still my favorite professor from any class I've taken at UCLA. His lectures are actually interesting and enjoyable to go to and if you just pay attention in class and speak your mind every once in a while, you'll do just fine. The homework and readings with the 3 essays are a lot of writing but he grades vary fairly if you just show some interest. He is extremely approachable and one of the most open minded professors at UCLA imo. It was an easy A for me even though English is probably my worst subject. The class is based around the textbook which are several short stories about modern moral social issues today. I personally tend to lean away from many liberal ideas and concepts and even though that comprises the heavy majority of thinkers here at UCLA, he was very good at respecting that people have other opinions and actually encouraged people having different views and just talking about them. The class is basically first half him teaching basic English concepts and talking about the stories of the week and last half discussions between a group of your peers and a wrap up full class discussion. He also shows a documentary on children who desire to be the other sex, which completely changed my beliefs on the topic and truly made me more open minded. Overall, the class is great and Professor Steinberg is tremendous. Take this class if you actually want to enjoy being at school.

I received an A. We had 3 essays the whole quarter and 2 writing and reading analysis/summaries to turn in per week (this was the homework). The book is some small AP Lit looking book. Extra Credit: Write small summaries on movies we watched in class and turn it in at the end of the quarter.

One of the BEST professors I've had so far. Steinberg is such a great guy. In class, he is always sure to cover topics that are very relevant to our lives, such as gender myths and the media. His class has truly taught me to think of the world in a different perspective. Moreover, he comes to class with articles often times to relate what we read about to current events! What other teacher does that?? But yeah, do yourself a favor and take this awesome guy!

Steinberg is the only professor I have met at UCLA that WANTS his students to talk.
Obviously, at a big university like UCLA, there is no time for talking because all time must be dedicated to learning.
Large lecture hall-type classes usually offer no space for students to talk. This is one of the rare classes at UCLA that are much smaller.
I took this class as a freshman. It was the first college classroom I ever walked into.
It can be beneficial for you in many ways to speak up in your classes. Dispel public speaking fears, gain confidence, etc. (This is coming from a Communication Studies major).
Anyways, Steinberg is just the coolest guy. He's super smart, has probably read more books than any of us ever will, and he gives you an article every class meeting of something he found on the internet that he thinks is interesting.
The book that you're required to read, Rereading America, is awesome. I enjoyed reading it and doing the homework assignments was a breeze with such a great book.
The paper prompts aren't hard to answer.
Many have said that Steinberg basically gives out A's. Of course you have to complete all the work, but the papers and assignments are not painful to write.
Steinberg stands up there and talks about all sorts of societal issues and interesting things he's read and screens cool documentaries and he always wants you to say something about it.
Which I think is really cool.
Definitely one of the best English Comp. 3 professors at UCLA! His class fills up so fast but if you can get him, I highly highly recommend taking his class!

My favorite professor for freshmen year! May have been an easy A but his main goal was not to give students simply a letter grade. Instead he challenged the student's opinions and encouraged the students to become more accepting of other ideas.

I AM SELLING REREADING AMERICA FOR $40! Fair condition with notes and marks inside. Email me if you are interested! ************* (forgive me for the middle school email address)
