Professor Steinberg is absolutely incredible. He truly cares about his students and he has a nice sense of humor. His class is almost entirely discussion based: if you don't talk in his class, honestly, shame on you. He brings in national issues that everyone should have a say on (from presidential primaries, to education issues, to race and socioeconomic issues, and beyond. If you don't have anything to say about any of these things, than either you've hidden under a rock your entire life or are too lazy or too scared to raise your hand). Please, RAISE YOUR HAND IN HIS CLASS. If you help start a discussion, everyone else will start talking and you'll realize how awesome the class can get. Don't be afraid to answer his questions, they're pretty open ended questions that don't necessarily have a right or wrong answer to them and Steinberg treats them as such. He's not going to glare at you or mark you down for saying something "wrong." The discussions are mainly opinion based and can be really interesting if people get into it.
As for his papers, they can definitely be a bit intense. But that being said, it's not hard to get an A (not an A-) in his class as long as you 1. Follow MLA format. If you don't know how to already do this, get it on quickly. Following MLA guidelines isn't hard and is stupid to lose points on (Easybib.com does most of the citation work for you anyway). 2. Put in effort and thoughtful analysis. Something you wrote the night beforehand will get you a B or a C. Something you actually put thought into and backed up and is reasonably well written will more than likely net you an A. 3. Don't be afraid to ask Steinberg for help. He's totally open to students and is more than willing to help you succeed.
All in all, I've gotten to know Professor Steinberg quite well, and I'm glad that I have. He's a great person to talk to and, honestly, if you wanted to find a good professor or mentor here at UCLA, Steinberg is YOUR man. :)
Ok. I know how people wrote nice review about him, and it's not completely wrong, but it's not 100% right either. As a student who took his class just last quarter, I will drop some real knowledge about this professor.
Take his class only if you are an American student who is confident to not to make any mistakes about even a tiny detail of MLA format. If you make any tiny mistakes regarding MLA format, trust me, you can't get any grade better than C. Also he is very picky about any expression uncommon in American English, so if you use one, no matter how good your idea is or whether it's grammatically correct, you will also get C or less. If you think I'm lying, you can try by taking his class and screw up your GPA. He will say all nice things and still give you C or less. I couldn't understand my grade and took my essays to writing center, but those guys at writing center could only point out few errors and said I deserved much better grade; I told the professor the same thing, but he never changed my grade. My friend got A-s and his didn't look any much better.
The followings apply to all students. 1. Don't turn in your work late. Doesn't matter if you late for 10 sec or 10 min, he won't take it and he shows no mercy about this. I came his office few minutes late for traffic, but he never graded my late work. I sent him an email explaining how I late and begged to at least grade with some point deduction so that many weeks of working essays wouldn't be wasted, and he said I better thank him for not giving me less than C. It's not exactly how he said but it's exactly what he meant. 2. Don't contact him with email. He just hates email and he becomes especially picky through email. 3. Use his office hours. He is probably the one who leaves the campus earlier than any other professor. He was always not available after 1pm and he doesn't come to school on friday. Don't know why he often complains about budget cut.
In conclusion, his class is good only for those American student with full awareness of MLA format; you don't even have to revise to get a better grade. Don't take his class, especially if you are an international student. I went to office hours and writing center many times and I still remember how he said I could get As if I fix few expressions, but I never did and I regret to take his class.
Dr. Steinberg is a great professor!!! He realizes how monotonous school is and really makes class topics extremely relevant in everyday lives. The reading is the only irritating part but like any class, the more reading you do the more prepared with discussion topics you will be. You're lucky if you get Dr. Steinberg as a professor. Interesting teacher! Interesting class!
Best English professor ever. Although the readings that he assigns were time consuming, it definitely wasn't hard. Each essay prompts were interesting because he allows you to connect the readings of myths to current events. I really enjoyed his class - it was very entertaining, so I didn't mind going at 8AM. Take him if you get the chance!
Really great professor. He's funny and mostly laidback. If you go to class a few minutes before it starts, he'll tell you so many things that it just blows your mind. He's very up to date with news and enjoys talking about what's going on in the world with his students and it's really informative. I probably learned more things just from the random conversations we had in class than I did from my other three classes I was taking at the time. Let's you rewrite every essay if you want at no grade reduction, but he's an easy grader anyway. I never had to rewrite any of my essays. Homework is pretty overwhelming, though. Although it's not TOO bad since you don't actually have to turn it in right away if you don't want to. Although, it's not really advised to get lazy because if you get backed up on homework expect to spend a whole day doing it. But it's nice to know that if it's like 5am and you haven't done the homework, you can sleep knowing you can do it later. Most of the reading is pretty interesting anyway, so it's not too bad. Take him if you can get him. But he fills up insanely fast, so good luck.
Take Steinberg. The class is pretty easy. The work is a little time consuming but not hard. You can rewrite your essays and he will go over them with you. His classes are also very interesting because we go over social structures.
This man is absolutely amazing. After the first day of class one immediately feels a connection with him. Everything he says is wise and should be recorded, written down, and published into a book immediately (hehehe). This was definitely an overwhelming quarter for me because of personal issues, but his kind nature and warm heart motivated me to push and persevere from all aspects of life. The man sincerely cares about his students and this in turn makes the students want to work hard and give their best effort in his class. He is very approachable, an important quality I find most other professors to lack. Not to mention he is hilarious. The class itself is interesting (never remotely close to being boring), for it consists of real issues that arise in our society. The class/group discussions are enjoyable because he presents them in a way that gets every student not only to think critically, but to actually want to engage in the discussions. I must say, professor Steinberg is the only reason I am sad to see this quarter come to an end.
EASIEST ENGLISH COMP PROFESSOR EVER!
Seriously, you have 3 essays (all rewritable) and close to 10 (there are 20 class meetings) homework assignments that are somewhat long and tedious but simple and easy.
TAKE HIM, EASIEST ENGLISH A EVER!
The best professor I've had at UCLA so far. Seriously, if you have the chance, TAKE HIM! He is an amazing, engaging, thoughtful person, not just a professor. He will get you thinking about things you never considered before, and he will give you great ways to tweak your writing style, as well as give you several things relevant to your life.
And yes, he is an incredibly easy professor. The workload I felt was a little much sometimes, as we had only a week to write our essays, but there were only 4 pages. Overall, just go into the class with an open mind. Professor Steinberg is a wonderful guy and if you put any sort of effort into the class you will leave satisfied (and with an A).
A great professor who will engage you everyday in class and keep all of the topics relevant to your life. You get an assignment each night of class (2 a week) but as long as you do the reading and try on your homework you will pass the class fine. You can either try to skimp by and barely pass or really enjoy the class, get a lot out of the material, and pass with a great grade. When it comes down to it, you cannot go wrong taking this professor, one of the best ever hired by UCLA.
