People only complain about this class because it is not a typical math-oriented course, attendance is required to do well and the professor isn't fond of questions in class. but if you are good at paying attention in lecture and memorizing most concepts, you will do well. there is no outside work required on top of really paying attention during the 2.5 hours of lecture each week. the professor often asked for questions and suggestions and hardly anyone responded, but later complained. she cares about student learning if you have questions during office hours because it is hard to understand student questions during class and it takes up everyone else's time. but you shouldn't have to ask questions because you only need to memorize the material. the way she verbally explains equations gets tricky, but taking international trade theory with/before really helps. given that the economics major at ucla is so narrow I found this course extremely useful in understanding broad economic theories like that of Marx, Keynes and smith. This is definitely my favorite major course so far.

Yes, this class is hell. Yes, this class will train you to type 120 words per minute. Yes, this class will drive you (almost) insane.

But the material isn't bad at all, relative to the other upperdiv Econ classes. This class is pure memorization, but the content isn't hard to memorize - only the amount of it. If you start early and stay consistent, it isn't that bad. The hardest part is being consistent so you don't have to cram over 600 PPT slides with improper grammar and vague math.

I recommend this class only if you have the willpower to sit and dead memorize the driest material since watching paint dry. Office hours were helpful the few times I scheduled and went. She was a lot slower and clearer 1-on-1, which most people didn't care to do. Also helps if you take this class with friends so you can share notes, because every word (and breath and awkward pause) counts.

She also posted all of her old midterms and finals, so it isn't like she doesn't prep you and throws you to the deep-end. If you're tolerant, ok with bad grammar and WAY too many unorganized emails, and can memorize material as thick as the bible, then you're solid.

Sule Ozler should not be anywhere near the profession of teaching. She needs to be far far away...preferably torturing the souls of student at USC or someplace of similar destitute nature. I received an A in this class because I respond well when it comes to fear and anxiety. And boy oh boy does Sule instill fear and anxiety into the souls of her students. Remember County Olaf from a Series of Unfortunate Events? Remember how absurd of a character he was? Imagine that, but X10. Half of me wants to report Sule Ozler to the Dean of Students for the debacle that happened during finals week. Those who were part of the Winter 2017 debacle know whats up. Half of me wants to take it to the Daily Bruin for a serious case study of insanity and absurdity. Anyways, if you decide to take this class, you're going to want anti-anxiety medications, a defibrillator, and an appointment with CAPS.

This class is horrifying. If you are a graduating senior (or even any economics major) save your life and your mental sanity by AVOIDING THIS CLASS. Everything is based purely off memorization and the professor is so rude. The grading break-down is as follows: 44% midterm, 54% final, 2% course evaluation.

Again, the class is based almost entirely off memorization from her slides but mostly what she says in class. You need to be on high alert every lecture and take down every word she utters if you have any dreams of even getting a C in this class. Her accent is so heavy and thick (which is fine), but she does not have any reverence for the fact that students have a tough time understanding her and she needs to slow down! If you do go ahead with this class, do not miss a word she breathes, pay close attention to the math examples, and make sure you write down all of her review questions from the beginning of class each day.

When it came to the midterm, it was not the best for me. I had 4 midterms in the span of 3 days and I ended up getting an 80% on it. At first, I was stoked given the circumstances. A grade of a B- isn't so bad when you have a lot on your plate. Unfortunately, my grade of 80% was not considered a B-, it was considered a C per her grade distribution. She curves against you if everyone does well!! So your hard work is NOT enough. You need to compete against your classmates because you are strictly compared to them! You do not get the grade you earn unless you're at the very top of the class.

This class is basically a rat race that took a serious toll on my mental state and my soul. I studied for this final for 3 weeks but was still unsure after the test because all I could think of was how everyone else did even though I knew I did pretty well. I ended up getting a B+ on the final but it came at a cost. Never before has a class emotionally brought me to my knees like this. I have never had an anxiety attack before this in my life. The day we were supposed to get our grades back, it took all day until the next morning for them to go up because there was a cheating situation in my class. During that time, my heart rate was through the roof, I broke down and cried twice, and I reloaded my CCLE in distress upwards of 100 times (I'm not exaggerating). I've never experienced this kind of fear about a silly grade my whole time at UCLA.

Long story short, please save yourself and don't take this class. Only good thing about it is that I am done now. I truly think the stress I endured knocked a few years off my life.

I'm a third year econ student who is a conceptual learner rather than a number cruncher, so I jumped on this class when I first read the course description. The material of this class honestly could have been super interesting, but it was taught in such a god-awful manner that Sule ruined it for everyone. The course focuses on the philosophies, influences, and theories of the most significant economic thinkers and ends off with a unit on household economics. The midterm was worth 44%, the final was worth 54%, and the submitted course evaluation was worth 2%.

The only good thing about this class was that there was basically no outside work for the course. There were no required readings and basically no homework except for studying for the assessments.

The bad part about this class is basically everything else. You'll sit through one lecture and end up going through 4-7 power points, most of which don't make any sense whatsoever. You'll walk out of class with less knowledge about the history of economics and will have to force yourself to research the economic thinkers to have a better grasp on the material. You'll ask questions and she'll be extremely rude and condescending. You'll ask her to go over a difficult mathematic example (that she barely went over during her lecture) during her "review session" and she'll say word-for-word "I will not answer your question. We went over it in class. Look at the slides." Looking for outside help? Nah, not a thing in this class. She ended up canceling her office hours since no one attended during the first 1.5 weeks, and she refused to answer any questions on the midterm or final.

If you're a senior graduating soon, I would advise you to not take this class. The class is based off of pure memorization, so if you don't hit the same exact words that Sule wants, you won't do well. The curves in this class were so ridiculous that if you missed ~5 points from a single question, you somehow ended up with a B-. Since Sule didn't proctor her own final exam, she ended up reporting every student who accessed CCLE during the hours of the final to get investigated by the Dean. Even if you weren't actually cheating and wanted to check the practice tests she uploaded on CCLE after finishing the test to check if your direct memorization was correct, you were reported to the Dean.

If you're daring enough to take this class, make sure you sit in the front of the class and take notes on every damn word that comes out of her mouth verbatim. I advise that you take econ 102 before taking this class because she barely has a foundation in macroeconomics and can't teach anything having to deal with supply and demand curves. Don't come late to class - she'll go over ~10 review questions that'll recap the previous lecture. Know everything on the practice test she'll upload on CCLE before the midterm and final.

The best part about this class is that it's finally over. Hasta la vista, Sule.

Professor Ozler is the single worst instructor I have had in my 3 years at UCLA. Not only does she take ZERO pride in her teaching, evidenced by her horrifically bad grammar on her powerpoint slides and inability to convey information effectively during lecture, she continuously makes excuses for her subpar efforts. Her grading is completely subjective, as her tests consist of a few vague questions (with many typos) that she seems to have "correct" answers for. She also insists on curving grades down, which I suppose is to be expected of such a miserable and terrible teacher looking to throw out as many C's as she can.

All in all, the class was a complete and utter waste of my time as I learned nothing and just continuously frustrated myself with trying to understand Professor Ozler's gibberish that she incessantly spews all over her powerpoint slides. Do not under any circumstance take this class.

Sule Ozler is the worst prof I have encountered at UCLA. She is disinterested in students, unsure of basic economic theory, ill prepared for lectures and her communication skills are weak overall. She "down graded the class" and negatively curved after the midterm - who does that? Truly unfair - plan to report her given much of her behavior does not fall under the guidelines for faculty integrity. Some of her emails included incoherent rants about her health including vulgar details that were truly inappropriate to share with the student body. After the final, which included all sorts of info she failed to mention during class, she made false accusations against the class regarding cheating. Nonsense about going on the website after you had turned in your test and left campus.... seriously??? I hope that UCLA takes note of the unstable behavior and replaces this train wreck of a "teacher" before there is a lawsuit based on her emails. She needs to read up on appropriate faculty behavior and communication. The head of the ECON dept needs to monitor her communication and shut her down or things will likely get ugly. Avoid her and any classes she attempts to teach. I wish I did not waste my money nor time with this terrible prof.
