Nguyen-Vo is one of the best professors at UCLA. I definitely found taking her Asian-Am 134 class valuable and rewarding. I came to UCLA wanting to learn and develop my critical thinking skills, and she has been the best professor so far to have challenged me to grow more as a student and as a person. The reading material can get challenging, so if you really want to learn and digest the material, you've got to spend time with it and ask questions. The professor is helpful and wants students to ask questions and engage in discussion. I always looked forward going to her class because I knew I would learn something new, whether from her or from another student through class discussion. From the posts below, I agree that she is one of the most intelligent professors I've had. She's deep, honest, and inspiring. Put in the work, and what you gain is invaluable.

Prof. Thu-Huong is easily one of my favorite professors. She is the nicest person ever and is incredibly understanding. The class consisted of a group presentation (20%), a midterm essay (40%), and a final essay or creative project (40%). (FYI - I took this class virtually so this info might not be useful in the future...) It was ~3 hours once a week which was kind of tough. She usually gave us a ~10 minute break during the middle of class but focusing during the second half was a struggle. Still enjoyed it though and would love to take another class with Prof. Thu-Huong again!

professor nguyen-vo was so empathetic and accommodated students affected by covid-19 and blm. what surprised me was that every lecture, she would typically start out by asking us how we felt and if everything was okay. no other professor was this attentive! the grading was much more lenient because she didn't want to put additional pressure on us, and this allowed me to enjoy the material.

I love Professor Nguyen-Vo! She's EXTREMELY intelligent, kind, sweet, and funny, and her lectures are super engaging. The slides don't show all the details of her lectures, so you actually have to pay attention to what she's saying. (She also doesn't post them to encourage coming to class.) The readings are really interesting, especially her own, but they can be dense sometimes. However, just remember to keep up with the readings and go to her office hours, they help! She loves talking to students who care about the class/topics and is super open-minded. I would love to take another class with her.
