The professor is really fun and engaging. You can tell he's really passionate and knowledgeable about his work. Lectures were funny and engaging and the TAs my quarter were very helpful! That being said, the class can have a heavy workload depending on how you organize your timeline when you work on the fieldwork project (which is like 60% of your grade). The fieldwork project can be a little difficult in terms of grasping what you really want to know about Korean folklore and if you don't have a large Korean or Korean American community around you, it may be a little hard to do as well. A lot of people managed to find people and don't be afraid to ask Korean or Korean American classmates! I'm not sure what I got in the class yet, but it has been an enjoyable quarter. Would recommend taking this class if you're looking for something fun and interesting, but make sure you have enough time on your hands! My recommendation for the fieldwork project is to pick something that was covered in class so you'll be more familiar with the topic.

This was an interesting and pretty straightforward class. That being said, if you do not have a strong connection of Korean's to interview, then you might have trouble with the final project. Most of the assignments and exams are done online. You can get all the books at the library.

I love this professor because he has so much personality within his lecture. When he speaks, it is fun and you learn something new each time, even if you are native korean. Entering the fieldwork online was the only challenging work in the class, but i really enjoyed the fieldwork. I enjoyed working on it so much that i will continue to work on a longer paper for it and continue to do work in Korea about the study. He is a great guy to have as a teacher and to know personally. I recieved an A in the class, and i actually consider it to be an easy A for me because i enjoyed doing the project. I will try to take another class he teaches for next year because he is such a great professor and person!

Prof. Tangherlini is an interesting man. He's quirky, witty, a bit sarcastic, and funny. He's a folklorist. He's knowledgable about Korean culture b/c he spent some time in the 1980s studying there. He and a friend made an interesting documentary on the Korean punk rock scene. Anywho, his class is fairly easy though you do need to do work, especially with the folklore project where you analyze a group. It's tedious but do-able. The midterm and finals are online, multiple choise and are easy. The analytical paper is a good sized paper and is a response to the data collected from observing your "group". Overall, this is an interesting class. Go to lectures...Tangherlini goes over stuff that will be directly in the midterm/final (that's not in the readings) and also do the readings cuz it'll help make sense of lectures and part of the readings are on the midterm/final.
