Skreta seems uncomfortable and somewhat nervous during lectures. She is not very good at explaining material in ways that students can understand. If you ask a question, she basically repeats the same thing she just said but more slowly. The subject matter is pretty hard but the tests weren't too bad. For our class, she did say she wouldn't curve the grades but I think she did. TA sections helped A LOT. Do all the problem sets and practice tests if you want a good grade.
WORST TEACHER AT UCLA! STAY AWAY! Not only is Skreta a horrible, unorganized lecturer, she refuses to explain anything outside of class and is virtually uncontactable. My final was grossly misgraded in the fall, and it took 10 weeks, over 30 emails and a formal complaint for her to even meet with me. I seriously doubt she understands half of the things she lectures about. Besides being a bad teacher she is a cold, heartless excuse for a human being. STAY AWAY. STAY AWAY. STAY AWAY.
This class seems hard but is actually easy. The whole time I thought I was doing poorly but got an A+.
The midterm is almost 100% the same as the sample midterm except with a slightly different starting equation.
You'd have to try pretty hard not to get 100% on one of the quizzes.
The final was pretty tough but apparently she curved it despite repeatedly saying that she wouldnt.
There are two keys to this class:
1)TA sections. Find a good TA and attend every one of their sections. This is critical as they explain how to do the problem sets.
2)Problem Sets. These tell you what you need to know for the class.
This class is extremely doable.
You know that she really wants you to do well in class. She meant it when she said that.
Lectures, as others have mentioned, are hasty and not so helpful. I learned most of the stuff from TA session. Go to the office hours because that one session in the week would never help you much with problem sets. Problem sets are key to this class as they highlight the essence of the whole course. I did the PS over and over before midterm and final which I found really helpful. Midterm is really similar to the sample midterm she gave us. Final is a big surprise for most of us. I figure we did so badly that she curved it eventually. Quiz (which is 20%) is definitely the part you could not miss. She only counts the best of the 3 quizzes (when you are present to do all 3 of them). The book only confuses me more... I didn't read it much (as I wouldn't even understand it) but I still get an A in class.
The professor did take the effort to help us understand. I felt for her. But I need to study myself with all these materials she presented in class. I would not recommend her.
Lecture was actually painful. I felt myself getting dumber every time I listened to her speak. Paradoxically, the more she would try to explain a concept, the more confused people would get.
She had microphone problems during the entire course, and only on the last lecture did she bring in a new microphone.
Her final was pretty dfficult, although surprisingly I received a very good grade in the class. I don't think coming to lecture was worth it though.
Avoid this professor at all costs if possible. Skreta should have been teaching an upper division elective with 20 students, not a lower division feeder course with 450 students.
I felt cheated.
She can't teach.
Everything I learned. I had to teach myself.
She gets behind her schedule. Skips alot of the material.
She rushes through because she is always behind.
Quizes are ok. Midtern is ok. But her final was impossible. Prep for the final, problem sets, sample final, lecture was not sufficient. TAs don't speak good english. Had hard time understanding what they were saying. TA session too short. always rushing through material.
I felt cheated out of my learning because I had to learn everything myself and am not confident that I learned everything I needed from this class.
I felt cheated out of my grade because quizes and mid term were doable. Prep for them were good enough. But final was way too difficult. Lectures, problem sets, reviews did not help. It was ridiculous.
It was painful experience.
