The most valuable lesson I learned in her class is NEVER EVER TAKE A 7:30 CLASS AGAIN!!! Especially in winter! It's half an hour, but 7:30 and 8:00 is a big difference, especially for a breakfast advocate like me.
She gives good lectures though, so some people still think it's worth it to go to her class so early in the morning. You really don't see a professor so passionate about economics very often. Defintely go to the lectures because it's worth your time. Once I accidentally turned off my alarm clock thus missed the class. Although my friend take absolutely excellent notes, it's still no comparison to being there listening to the lecture yourself.
If you can do the homework assignments on your own, you should be able to do fine in class. Some of the TAs can't speak English very well so you might want to consider going to another TA's session. I am not going to mention names because TAs are always changing from quarter to quarter, but that's the general idea. Same thing apply to other classes since there are a lot of TAs that can't speak English very well. If you are in engineering, you know what I am talking about. ;-)
The professor posted all her lecture notes and handouts online. I didn't use the book much because the whole test is basically on the notes.
Notice there is no curve in this class so you better not lose too many points. She gives a survey at the end which can boost your grades up (I go from 89 to 94, that's half a letter grade) so that's kind of a curve. She's helpful in office hours although she is not very available outside of class.
She is a good lecturer, but heck, I am never taking 7:30 classes again.
Although this class was abnormally early in the morning, it wasn't so bad. You really have to go to lecture because the notes she posts are just sort of an outline and you have to fill in all the graphs and stuff. Don't be decieved though...at first I thought the class was really easy but then the material after the midterm (after we did budget lines) I lost her and didn't try to catch up until a few days before the finals..and it was NOT fun. I still managed an A- though, because her lectures are easy to understand for the most part. Oh ya and there is no curve but considering she basically gave us all 25 points that helped me more than a curve probably would have. And try to get all the points on the homework and other assignments, if you have trouble then go to the TA office hours cause they are helpful. Oh ya and she says to read the book all intensely, but I didn't find it neccessary unless there is something specific you don't understand. Other than that, good luck getting up early!
I thought that she was a really good lecturer. She explains concepts very well and her TA Dee was an excellent TA. I really felt that I learned a lot from this class but I disagree with students who find this class to be an easy A. There are only 600 points total in the class and no curve. This means that you can only miss 60 points for an A-. This is very hard to do unless you're almost perfect on her exams and perfect on all of the quizzes and homework. Her midterm and final are worth 200 points a piece. There are not a lot of questions on them. There are 40 multiple choice which are worth 4 points a piece. If you miss just a few of these multiple choice, they can really bring down your grade on the test. The rest of the exams are composed of 2 free response questions which are similar to homework. I believe in one of her emails, she said that the average on the midterm was a 78%. I ended up with a B in this class. I would recommend that you take her because she was a good lecturer but don't take this class because you want an easy A.
During this quarter, I'm taking Econ 1 and 2 simultaneously (Prof Brown for Econ 2 @ 8:00 AM), and I must say the 7:30 timeslot can have its problems. As a lecturer, Bresnock is OK. The pace of the class is very slow, which can lead you to lose the attention that it takes for you to say "diminishing returns" on cue. Although the pace of this class seems exceedingly slow, she does get the material through your head. As for an easy A, it's certainly doable, as long as you're one that doesn't make the average careless errors of a college student.
Professor Bresnock assigned a lot of work. The four homework sheets weren't too bad. There were three quizzes. And there was a two page paper and a computer project. The computer project wasn't too bad. Basically, you plug in data into the program and explain the outcome. She is a really good teacher. She gives a lot of details and explains things very well. She has two good TA's in Fred and Dee. Get to know them because they're really helpful. There is a lot of reading material. Her midterms were okay. I wouldn't say they were easy or really difficult. They were a little difficult. The good thing is that her final isn't cumulative. She isn't around because she works full time at Cal Poly Pomona. The worst thing was that her class was at 7:30. That alone can turn off some people. So you aren't willing to go to every lecture, don't take the class. If you could wake up, take it only if you are an economics or econ-related major because this isn't an easy GE course.
The class isn't that hard, and Bresnock is pretty effective at helping you understand the info. You can probably get a B without much studying. She's never around campus though, and she's always talking about Cal Poly Pomona or some other facet of her life, which can be really annoying at 7:30 in the morning.
I don't understand how all these people are saying her class is easy. It seems easy until you realize that each multiple choice question on her midterm and final are worth 4 points and her hw is only 10 points a piece and there's not a lot of it. Maybe it's because she switched books this quarter but I don't think she's all that easy and she DOES NOT offer extra credit this quarter as previous students have posted. Basically our TAs told us we could only miss 10 M/C questions on the midterm and final COMBINED to get an A in the class (assuming you get 100% on the hw, paper, project, and quizzes). She is however a good professor and I don't mind waking up for her 730am class. If you're looking for an easy GE don't take this class but if you really want to learn microeconomics then definately take it.
