Given the online and open book exam nature of the class, Psych 127C with Chorpita was a breeze. Chorpita is a very approachable and knowledgeable professor, and he definitely presented the material in a way that was easy for us students to comprehend. There were 5 quizzes throughout the quarter with add up to 20% of your grade, but he drops your lowest score which is a plus. The midterm is 35% of your grade while the final is 40%, and the last 5% are for participation. The quizzes and exams weren't difficult at all, but I will admit that there were some tricky questions. Just be sure to really understand what each question is asking and be careful about the exact wording of multiple choice options. There would definitely be more to memorize similar to most classes if the exams weren't open book, but I would definitely recommend taking Chorpita in-person!
I don't think I could recommend this class with Dr. Chorpita enough. Everything you learn will be useful or is just good information to know in life so you don't feel like its a busy work class (even though there's basically no homework) and Dr. Chorpita is just the sweetest and best person/professor I've ever had!!
The grading scheme:
midterm (just 1) - 35%
final exam - 40%
quizzes - 20%
participation - 5%
You have to speak at least twice in class, only one can be during discussion, but this can be asking a question not just answering one. Lectures aren't recorded, attendance isn't mandatory but he gives 5 random pop quizzes that he opens during class and have 8 minutes to do at the end of lecture (but he'll kinda make it obvious if he's gonna give a quiz in the next class). Even though you don't have to go to class, he'll make quiz and exam questions based on things he says in class and isn't obvious in the slides. Lectures are so fun and interesting that you'll want to go to class anyway. If you have to do a psych upper div, or any upper div, take this class with Chorpita!!
I will put it this way. You can kill yourself with another professor for 127a or you can take Dr. Chorpita's 127c and get an A. I looked forward to class every day. Unlike other professors in psych, this class actually tests your direct knowledge without trying to trip you up maliciously on exams. Dr. Chorpita is exactly what a professor should be. Fascinating, hilarious, engaging and FAIR.
The final was by far easier than the midterm. The midterm has some ambiguous questions but the material on the final was exactly what he had on the slides. Don't worry about the book...all the information on the exams are on the lecture slides. Overall a good professor.
Grade: A+
He's a nice guy and he's pretty funny but folks, this class is over-rated. Before the class started, I was pretty excited to take it, considering all the positive reviews below. But the truth is that you don't really learn anything of substance. He mostly just reads of of the slides and doesn't really elaborate. Also, it can get incredibly boring..
This professor is absolutely amazing. He will do anything in his power to help you LEARN and make sure you get the best grade possible. Dr. Chorpita is hilarious, so there's never a dull moment in class and you'll never find yourself NOT wanting to go to class. He is so sweet, caring, kind, and knowledgable and I am SOOO sad that I will no longer have him as a professor. It was his first time teaching this class, so he did a mid-quarter feedback evaluation, and he took all the feedback he received and applied it. Everyone in the class adores him and respects him. Absolutely the best professor ever. If you don't take him, you're missing out on the most amazing class of your UCLA career.
I completely agree with the post below me. Chorpita is the greatest professor here at UCLA. He is really dedicated to helping us LEARN the material without making it boring. He is seriously hilarious, so you'll never fall asleep in this class, and you won't dread attending lecture. Don't leave UCLA without taking his class! Also, if you study all the information from lecture, you'll do fine on the tests and end up with an A in the class.
I took 127C with Chorpita. I enjoyed his class very much, he makes it worth coming. He has tons of funny stories for each lesson and most of the time you won't get through all of the slides. He has in class review before the midterm and final, so you know exactly what to study. He offers extra credit and gives you all of the answers for the quizzes during class. You have to take him, he is one of the best & funnest Psych professors at UCLA!
Dr. Chorpita is not only very knowledgable but also very funny and makes you excited to go to class. You have to participate in his class in order to succeed but that isn't hard because the content is so interesting. He would even bring his little white dog to class sometimes and it would just walk around the aisles. I saw his name teaching another class and immediately signed up!
Best professor at UCLA hands down. I wish all my professors were like him then my life would be amazing.
You have to come to class since he has unannounced quizzes, so you have to stay on top of material. But it was actually the highlight of my week to go to his classes since you basically laugh the majority of the time! For the exams know EVERYTHING from the review session and if he says some questions are easier to understand if you read the book, read that part of the book for that topic. (rent the book from amazon much cheaper, unless ur super into child psych and want to use it as a reference in future)
But as long as you know the review session you are good.
He makes the class really interesting and I don't really get how people managed to get less than an A in the class in all honesty. You can't have the attitude it is "easy" you still have to study but he makes it easier for you to study since he tells you everything that is going to be on the exam during the review. Some questions can be a little tricky but as long as you remember the key symptoms like for ADHD diagnostics you should be able to rule out certain alternatives.
Many people say 135 with Lieberman is super easy but I actually thought this class was easier than that in that it was more straightforward, and most test questions are pretty obvious answers. whereas 135 has scenario questions that sometimes aren't clear.
Anyway Chorpita made me want to become a child psychologist after taking this class, and it is really useful knowledge to have if you are ever around kids, or plan to be a parent in the future. It does say something about the teacher when I still remember the majority of the things I learned in the class whereas with other classes I forget everything after the exam.
Something EXTREMELY important to keep in mind it is REALLY good to try to score incredibly high on the midterm and quizzes basically 98%, depends on curve, if you do you may have an AWESOME reward in addition to letter of recommendation coupon at the end of quarter, I don't want to reveal what since I don't want him to stop doing it but it was extremely worth it, I got an A+ in the class.
