Fall 2017 - (REVIEW FOR SPANISH 3, NOT 2) Professor Suhr is very average. She definitely wants to see students do well, and is a nice enough lady, but doesn't go above and beyond from a teaching standpoint. She also definitely wants everyone to put the effort in towards getting an A (even though obviously a lot of people take it P/NP), and she will sometimes deliberately grade you down a little bit if you're not putting in what she deems is enough effort. When push comes to shove though, she'll get you through the course in one piece and (unless you REALLY don't try, and make a point of it) she won't fail you.

Fall 2024 - I really enjoyed having Suhr as a professor, she cares deeply about her students and tries her best to help them. I really enjoyed attending classes and I would highly recommend attending them too. I do have to say that if you do not have a background in Spanish or a pretty good grasp on the subject matter in Spanish 2–whether you skipped it or took it a while ago–you will struggle with the class. Despite that, there are many resources to practice and I have faith that you can still do well in this class. While taking Spanish 3, you will have 2 main concerns: - vhl assignments: these aren't particularly hard, just a little a little bit of a hassle. Assignments are due by class time, which is a bit stressful if your course load is really heavy, but I'm sure you'll be fine if you get them done sooner rather than later. - Exams: there are 2 parts of the exam, both done in person. The writing portion, is done online–currently, this consists of 3 free response questions. One were you go to a website in Spanish and answer questions using the information, another where you work with a partner to complete, and one that might involve responding to a prompt or watching a video. The oral exam takes 5 minutes and you will have 5 minutes before to prepare with your group (usually of 3-4 people) and respond to a prompt.

Winter 2024 - I really admire Profe Suhr. She's so fair and genuinely passionate about teaching Spanish. She goes out of her way to help students, especially with Spanish translations. Her office hours are incredibly helpful because she breaks down everything from the slides to ensure everyone understands, even repeating herself in English if needed. I've taken her class twice this quarter, and it's been fantastic both times. While there isn't much homework aside from readings, sometimes challenging to grasp, paying attention in class is crucial because she simplifies everything. Personally, I would've liked more homework to reinforce learning, but as long as you attend class, take notes, and review the slides, you'll excel.

Fall 2020 - Profesora Suhr is a very open-minded, sweet individual that makes you reflect on yourself and the society we live in. The hardest part of the class is organizing and dedicating time for the organization you want to volunteer at, but other than that it was very straightforward!

Spring 2019 - One of the best professors in UCLA and in the Spanish and Portuguese department with all honesty. Carla Suhr is extremely dedicated, kind, and genuinely wants to see her students succeed. I am so fortunate to have taken this class with her. Although the class is three hours long and can get tiring after a while, it is well worth taking her class and experiencing your service learning with her class. We were given an extra credit opportunity but pretty sure that was just random and not every quarter. Supposedly was worth 5% but was only given 3%, which is unfair considering there was effort required in the actual extra credit.

Fall 2022 - This class requires 50-60 hours of community service in Spanish in the community. Professor Suhr helps you find places where you can work, but this means volunteering 6-8 hours/week, which sometimes can be difficult to manage on a busy schedule. However, I would 100% recommend this class. It is one of the best and coolest classes I've ever taken. Professor Suhr is one of the most kind and passionate teachers I've ever had. She is amazingly intelligent and does an excellent job of passing that spark and curiosity of life to her students. She truly cares about the world and all the volunteer work that we were all doing and it is so evident. Three hour classes are extremely difficult but she did an amazing job of making them entertaining and holding us to high expectations as well. I really appreciated her as a teacher and I feel inspired to go and conquer the world. She gave excellent feedback and made me want to do well in the class, not just to get a good grade, but to actually learn and conquer the material. The class is taught in Spanish and we have to speak in Spanish all the time as well. She was so patient with all of our bad Spanish and did a great job at making us feel comfortable enough to try to speak. I feel so bonded to my fellow classmates and I will remember this class for year to come. I really would recommend Professor Suhr to everyone. This is such a cool class that makes you get involved in the community. The grade includes: the 50-60 hours of service, 3 diaries (written in Spanish), a mid quarter oral presentation on what your service is, weekly response posts, and a final project. The out of class work isn't too bad besides the service hours. The final project includes creating something to help your organization or writing a research paper.
