One of the best Math Professors I've had at UCLA.
Professor Ozel was a terrific professor and a great choice for any math class.

The workload is very light, with no turned in homework, a couple of quizzes and 1 midterm and 1 final.

Quizzes
His quizzes were short and simple to do. He had five quizzes each with one or two questions (keep in mind this is a summer course), and he drops the lowest 2 quizzes.
This category should be and will be an easy 100%.

Exams
Very straightforward and straight out of his lectures and textbook. I think the average was like a 95% on his midterm, (I don't really remember the exact number, but it was a crazy high number).
He does not curve down either and grades very nicely. I got some notation wrong, but all he did was write a note on my exam saying to change the notation, and he didn't take off any points.

His final was just like his midterm, very straightforward, lifted from his lectures and textbook. I don't know the average for the final, but I'm sure it was just as high as his midterm average.

His lectures were engaging, helpful, and overall very interesting. My only gripe with his lectures was that he had everything written down in advance on a pdf, so he went a little bit fast and it was definitely not possible to write everything down before he moves on.
I ended up writing down the notes and sometimes printing them before lecture, and then just took notes on his thoughts and tips.

Overall, terrific professor, helpful, engaging, and very straightforward. I highly recommend him for math 61 and any class.

Basically everything on his note is from Elementary Analysis by Ross, without changing a letter at all. Why bother. Just go study the textbook and do the exams.

Professor Ozel is passionate about mathematics and he is very helpful during office hours. That being said, I did not find his lectures particularly helpful. Lectures mainly involve him reading over pre-written lecture notes that cover the exact same information as the textbook.
Homework is not required but exams are frequent, with their difficulty being: final > midterms >> quizzes. 1 drop quiz is allowed.

This class is markedly harder in non-COVID quarters, and it seems like students liked his teaching style much less in person.

Ozel lectures by literally copying and pasting textbook chapters onto a chalkboard. If you don’t understand what he is saying in class, you’re out of luck because you will find the exact same information in the textbook.

The first midterm and final were unfairly difficult. A significant portion of both exams hinged on either remembering some obscure, seemingly unimportant fact from the class or mastering the content from 170E. I feel like these kinds of questions are unfair because they test whether or not you remember some nuance (i.e. you just happened to review that nuance a couple of days before the exam) instead of your overall comprehension of the broad 170S topics. In contrast, the second midterm was bordering on offensively easy.

I know Ozel has good intentions, but he simply doesn’t do a great job teaching or testing.

Awesome prof. Tests were long because of COVID but they were fair and tested material we learned. Everything was so clear and reasonable and sometimes funny- every topic was explained very well and each exam and some lectures had great LOTR and pop culture references. Just know calculus and your 170E/170A/Stats 100A material decently enough and you should be fine, just remember to do the not-assigned practice problems. (P.S. Take this instead of Stats 100B any day, it's the same material minus some linear algebra stuff but explained soooo much better. I took the first couple weeks of 100B and everyone kinda hated it.)

Ozel is the best. He is very nice and responds to emails quickly. There are 5 simple quizzes, 2 of which are dropped. 2 fair midterms, but he drops 1 of them in one of the grading schemes. Final slightly harder than midterms.

ozel is the best. if you're considering taking this instead of stats 100b, DO IT. the content of the class is much more practical and applicable. ozel makes it easy to understand, his quizzes and exams are very fair. he's extremely helpful, offers a ton of office hours, and is very patient, friendly, and makes the material easy to understand. it was actually a pleasure taking this class, 10/10 experience

Prof Ozel is awesome. The material we cover in this class is not super easy, but if you practice a lot in the beginning of the quarter, it’s easy to understand the later concepts because they build off the earlier ones. As for Ozel, he’s extremely helpful in office hours and offers a generous grading scheme: lowest 2 out of 5 quizzes are dropped, and there’s 2 midterms and one final. The first midterm and the final both had extra credit questions. Because he also led Discussion, he observed how long it took us to take the quizzes (just 2 questions) and set the length of the exams accordingly, so we wouldn’t run out of time. I highly highly highly recommend him. Great prof and great person.

I would highly recommend taking this class with professor Ozel. Despite the occasional errors in his lecture notes, he is an extremely good lecturer. One of the greatest part of this class was the homework - he doesn't collect the homework problems so it's up to the students to decide whether to do them (but it's definitely helpful to get some practice on our own). The only shortcoming of this class was the number of exam and quizzes that he gave - there were 5 quizzes, 2 midterms and 1 final, but the nice thing is that he drops two of the lowest quizzes. Overall, I believe people would enjoy his class a lot as he is definitely one of the nicest professors in the math department.
