Take physics from another professor! Please! I don't know about Astro, but for electrostatics she was horribly ineffective. Her midterm for waves was not bad, but the midterm for charges and E fields and the final were horrific.
Her lectures were filled with mistaken examples and forgotten constants.
She was so repetetive in lecture that it was hard to follow and discern if any progress was being made in the class.
The online quizes she favors were BS as well. They often didn't work properly, and you could just check the glossary or skim the chapter for the answers. They don't help you learn anything.
For Spring '03, she employed this little practice of having the class answer example questions by holding up little numbers she passed out the first day. This middle school method of teaching is virtually ineffective at the college level, especially when the questions are asked before the material is taught. It all leads to an overwhelming sense of frustration for almost the entire quarter and definitely during finals week.
DON'T TAKE HER FOR PHYSICS!
I beg to differ. I was in the top 5% of the class out of 168 people, and still she refused to give me an A! After all, she said in class that she is a proponent of grade deflation in UCLA. So unless you have no intentions of getting an A or if you are sure you will get the HIGHEST score in the class, please don't take physics with her. You won't be sorry until you get your final MyUCLA score.
At first, I was worried about taking Physics 1B with Turner since there were no reviews of her previously teaching the class - waves, electric current, and magnetism weren't her specialty. She often forgot constants when writing down equations on the board, so read the chapter when it's assigned so you can catch those mistakes, otherwise you'll just get confused. She tried to introduce math that no one had ever seen before (even though some people might have enjoyed it, I think most were confused). Also, she couldnt answer deep theoretical questions too well either and didn't seem to put extra effort into finding the answers. And what made things worse was the fact that we only had ONE TA and it took weeks to get hw and tests graded.
However, there were good things about this class. Turner is an approchable, nice, and generous teacher, which is important if you want good grades. She's very patient in helping you with hw during office hrs and the curves on tests were very lenient. Oh yea, and she lets you have a note card on tests - so as long as you do your hw and read the chapters and put some formuals on the card, you don't really have to study much for the midterms or finals. Oh yea, and she give's online reading quizes, which ibky require skimming of the answers (really easy). Unfortunately she seems to not give A+'s =P
Overall, I'd say ur making a good choice in taking her class if you want a good grade, but not if you want to learn a lot.
I took this professor after reading the positive reviews here but it seems Turner is not nearly as effective teaching actual physics as she is at teaching basic astro. You can sort of tell when she is lecturing to you that she doesn't really know what she's doing. She does demos often, but sometimes has to have the demo explained to her by another professor. When she lectures she seems to be just copying out of the book. It was so boring watching her copy stuff onto the board that I rarely went to class. My previous professor, Jura, was always stimulating. He always had this way of respecting and admiring physics. He treated his students like physicists, giving interesting problems on homework and tests. On the other hand, doing work in Turner's class is generally a chore. The first midterm was fairly easy. the second was kinda hard and as a result the class did pretty bad on it. The final was ridiculously, insultingly easy.
