I am currently taking Prof. Schein for Psych. 119N. I think it is best for me to evaluate him now while I am taking him, because I think if I got my grade (good or bad) first it would influence my opinion.

Dr. Schein is a TERRIBLE professor. He is completely out of touch with his students and reality in general. His lectures are very bad. He is very rude and condensing to students. This isn\355t the typical rudeness, though. It is very odd, one has to see it for themselves to understand. At times he would just ignore people when they would try and stay something. He is just very jumpy in his lectures, absolutely no order or continuity in his lectures!!!

He said all these things about his class and lectures on the first day of the quarter and they were all misleading and wrong. Stuff about how the \354quizzes\356 are just to make sure you did the reading, but when we took the quizzes they were pretty difficult and detailed. About the 5th week of classes, after someone complained to him about the difficulty, he said that he would like to provide justification for his exams and reading, but, in my opinion his justification was very weak, he basically said something to the effect of, \354I know my quizzes are hard, but they\355re not.\356 Which is completely unfair because through the quarter he said, they quizzes are only used to see if you did the reading\326just try and get the main idea\326 this and that\326 anyway\326.he lied.

READING: The reading was horrible. It was too expensive first off. Second, basically what he did was photocopy two or three books, reorganize the chapters and sold them as readers. They are so extremely repetitive. I felt like I was reading hundreds (literally) of pages of the same thing over and over. Moreover, the reader, from section to section, seems to have no continuity, like his lectures. It seems like you are just reading massive amounts of information. The reading is extremely boring. VERY BAD!

You are also required to do two presentations, a research paper, and attend two seminars. Just way too much work for this class. I don\355t see the point. I like doing presentations, and seminars are interesting, but that doesn\355t mean they have to be assigned to us all in the same class.

I have to mention two things. One, this is strictly describing him as a professor (for the most part). He seems to be a decent person and has done some nice things in class. He tries to learn peoples names, which is nice, but that does not mean anything. You don\355t have to know students\355 names to be a good teacher. Anyway, I think the saddest thing out of all of this is I don\355t think he realizes any of this, he is oblivious. I mean, who in the world would assign so much unnecessary, unorganized reading\326.

I took him for Psych 119N. I feel genuinely sorry for anyone that has to take him for a Life Science course. I don\355t recommend him at all\326 obviously.

It is obvious what I am saying is strong and there is a lot more I can say. However, it is unfair for teacher like Dr. Schein to be teaching. It don\355t mind difficult teachers or whatnot, but when teachers cannot truly be considered teachers at any stretch of the imagination, and the readings can\355t provide you with the tools to succeed in the class, and when the teacher is MISLEADING, then you enter a new field. (In my time at UCLA Dr. Schein is just one among a number of bad professors that demonstrate that UCLA has no priority in providing quality education for its undergrads.)

Evalv for LS 2:

Schein rushes through a lot of his lectures, and when he's short on time, he will practically have a speed race with himself to see how fast he can read the words off the slides and hit the "next" button. Don't expect to learn a lot in class, so make sure you read the book. Midterms were pretty hard, I'd say; we would have to know very particular details about the systems, and even when I felt fully prepared for them, I would look at his questions and be confused...He was also a bit of a creep when dealing with girls, so beware.

Overall, try to avoid Schein for LS2 if you can, but if you have to take him, then be prepared to work hard.

Hello,
I took LS 2 and the HONORS Seminar LS 89 with Professor Schein. He is truly one of the best professors I have had by far. Schein is one of those people you come accross and motivates you to want to do your best, as cheesy as that sounds. I really dont see how people can complain about him as a professor. I just think that everyone who doesnt like him is because they dont like to do work and actually learn, which is something that Professor Schein is truly concerned with. If you dont like to read, do your assigned work or learn, then yeah, you might hate his class, but I mean, then why even take classes. Thats my opinion. Granted, he sometimes rushes through material during class, but that is because there is so much to cover. Its not like he forbids you from learning the material on your own and reviewing, which you should be doing anyway. So while there are plenty reviews that tell you to avoid taking a class with him, I advise you take him if you get a chance. He is very reaching and concerned with student learning. By far, the most cheeful and humble professor I have encountered.
And no, he is not sexist like people say he is. I feel that people just take little things and make them a big deal. He approaches girls no different than he does guys. Really good Prof.

I TOOK LS2

Professor Schein is very enthusiastic. I've never met a professor who cares about his students so much. He would ask for your name if you sit front, and interact with you throughout the lecture. I thought it was helpful because this kept me awake. Even though he rushes through lectures sometimes, it' not too hard to catch up if you read texts afterwards. I like how his tests are multiple choices (50 problems) and not accumulative! So for the final, you're basically having a third midterm. So, read texts, go over slides, and do online quizzes before you take his tests. The tests are HARD, i think. But come on, it's a science class at UCLA. Of course, it's not going to be an easy A class.

He uses iclicker..so take his class if you're willing to show up to the lectures.

If you are really interested in LS, you should take LS89 seminar. You go to LS-related, especially neuroscience seminars on campus then write a paragraph after each seminar that you attend. You need 10 of those. It's a bit time consuming, but I personally thought it was worth it to listen to many speakers from all over the place talking about different topics.

Ok so I actually took the CHEM M117 version of this class, but bruinwalk wouldn't let me choose that. The only difference is that the honors students have to write an additional 10 page paper.

This is a great class if you're interested in fun information about abstract geometry. I have always loved this type of material and this class was perfect for me. It relates to chemistry a fair amount and I highly recommend taking this class at the same time as CHEM 172. My main complaint is that the lectures sometimes feel very long and are late in the day so it was somewhat exhausting at times. Still, I learned a lot of stuff in this class that I don't think I could ever be exposed to anywhere else and I highly recommend it to those interested.

I had him for LS2.

First off, Dr. Schein is a pretty nice guy. He is enthusiastic, a little dorky and really into his material which kinda kept me awake through most lectures. He definitely likes to learn the names of the people in the front, mostly girls, which is pretty cool. HOWEVER, his class is not easy. He races through lectures and I feel like he said we were behind already from week 2 to week 10 (and never lectured about 10 slides in the last chapter).

His test are difficult. LOTS OF STRAIGHT MEMORIZING. Not too much conceptual and a lot of tricky questions. But my biggest problem was the curve. I calculated my points in at the end (he tried to "normalize" the scores -wtf??- by giving us a 0/8.1 for everyone) and i dont know how he does his grading. The percentage I got in the class was my final grade, however I talked to some people and there final letter grade was curved up from their raw percentage so i dont know what the fuck happened to mine but that was jacked up...

Sure it was hard and I got ripped off in grading, but hes still not a bad lecturer. Really smart and available if you need him but GOOD LUCK on his tests!!
